BSE-SVKM’s NMIMS Centre for Capital Market Studies

The Agreement entered into between The Stock Exchange Education and Research Services, a public trust established by the Bombay Stock Exchange and SVKM’s NMIMS in March 2005 became the platform for the setting up of the BSE SVKM’s NMIMS Center for Capital Market Studies to conduct educational programs in the field of Capital Market Studies. This resulted in the design and development of the curriculum for the MBA (Capital Markets), which was approved by the Academic Council and the Board of Management of the NMIMS. The coming together of NMIMS and the BSE symbolizes the cooperation between two renowned institutions of the vibrant city of Mumbai, the financial capital of India.

The Stock Exchange, Bombay, is over 130 years old. In addition to being a well-known, well-established institution, it is also modern and futuristic in its outlook. In 2005, it took the shape of a corporate body, after which it is called the BSE. The Exchange has been a pioneer in more ways than one. The BSE Sensitive Index, called the SENSEX is the bell-weather index. This single number is used as a reference point by the entire investing community interested in investing India. Over the years, BSE has used technology, management and information at its command to its advantage and to serve as a superb platform for investment. Listing on the BSE is a matter of prestige for a number of issuers in India. With the opening up of the Indian economy to global forces, the day is not far off when overseas companies also seek listing on the BSE to offer Indian investors more investment opportunities. The Exchange has taken a number of initiatives in investor education, in over two dozen cities all over India. The BSE Training Institute provides education and training in various aspects related to the capital markets. With the revolution in global capital flows, information and technology, there is an acute need for trained professionals to man important positions in all spheres of capital market activity. This includes stock exchanges, commodity exchanges, regulatory bodies, policy-making bodies, market intermediaries, asset management companies, corporate bodies, etc., to name a few. With this objective in mind, a long-duration program called the MBA (Capital Markets) has been custom-designed by the two collaborators.

The program is unique in the sense that it integrates conceptual knowledge, contemporary inputs, technology, information and skill development. There is a high IT application content in the program, using state-of-the-art hardware and software. Exercises, assignments, case studies, classroom discussions, testing of models, research projects, etc., trading to upgrade the trading skills and integrate with the conceptual knowledge imparted by a team of core as well as visiting faculty. Classes are held at the center equipped with top class facilities, supported by a rich library of books, journals and on-line capital market data. The first seminar on Capital Markets, INVESTOCRAFT sponsored by BSE, was conducted in June 2006 and it is conducted every year by the students. It is addressed by seasoned practitioners and is very well received by students as well as market participants.
