The one year Post Graduate Course in Film and Television Editing recognizes the activity of Film Editing as being the final act of film writing. In that sense, the course is designed to encourage editing students to think of themselves more as auteurs, stylists and designers than simply as cutters. Recognizing the Cinematic experience as a purely mental construct or activity in the viewers mind, we approach Editing as an Art that designs the phenomenalresponses of the viewer and also exercises a fair control over meaning making. The Editing course therefore provides a high degree of intellectual tools and abstractions along with practice based knowledge of Editing Softwares and Workflows.
In Editing Aesthetic theory, inputs are provided in subjects such as Visual literacy, colour theory, use of graphics, Shot nomenclature, lensing stylistics, narrative structure, dramatology, management of dramatic tension, understanding Rhythm and the relationship between ideology and style. Both theoretical and practical inputs are given in subjects such as
-
Physical relational and directional continuity
-
Dialogue sequences
-
Action sequences
-
Montage Sequences
-
Comedy sequences
-
Non fiction films
-
Ad films, Corporate films, AV's and infomercials.
Each Editing Student is assigned to a Directors Unit and he or she is expected to perform as a team member in those exercises designated as Unit exercises. We expect the student to be able to collaborate with the Director and share ideas which encompass both high philosophical abstraction and minute considerations of time-space adjustments.
The Digital Academy one year Post Graduate Diploma Specialization Courses in Film and Television Direction, Cinematography, Editing and Sound Engineering & Recording are designed to foster innovation and creativity via the development of necessary intellectual and conceptual tools along with relevant practical training. Any practice in Cinema is governed by aesthetic goals and philosophical considerations. Unlike many other institutions which treat Cinema practice as a kind of mechanical craft, we at DA encourage our students to develop a sound theoretical and aesthetic body of knowledge which can help them to solve creative problems under various circumstances. In short, our courses are designed to not only tell you what to think but also teach you how to think.
We recognize that creativity especially in the field of Cinema is inextricably linked to technology and workflow methods. Our courses therefore are informed by the latest, state of the art technological developments as well as a sound preparation for the technologies of the future. At the heart of our courses is the core value which sees Cinema as a unique Art form. We recognize that whether one is making a feature film, a documentary, a short film, an Ad film, a Corporate or an infomercial, the common aesthetic of artistic Cinematic presentation is the necessary knowledge required by its practitioners. We therefore endeavor to prepare our students as artists / technicians who are capable of not only joining Cinema practice as it stands today but are also capable of handling the vicissitudes of the future.
The one year full time specialization courses are conducted by DA and are accredited by the University of Westminster; United Kingdom. These courses have been accredited as 120 level 4 credits and 60 level 5 credits, which is equivalent to the first half of the UK honours degree.
