Overview, Content & Syllabus

The one year Post Graduate Course envisages Cinematography as both an aesthetic and technical course. We recognize that the development of a keen Cinematic and narrative aesthetic is as important as technical know-how and operational skills. The course therefore not only provides inputs in technical Cinematography but also Art History, Visual Literacy, Film Appreciation and Film History.

On the technical side, it provides advanced inputs in both optical and digital modes of image acquisition. The course is designed to provide ample time for the development of advanced operational skills. The Cinematography course is very practice intensive through a series of structured practical exercises going from simple to complex. Lighting Practicals are designed to help students familiarize themselves with all kinds of lights and lighting situations.

Inputs in optometry, spectrometry densitometry, sensitometry and laboratory processes, are given in the optical acquisition domain. In the digital domain - intensive inputs in all high – end video viz 5K RAW, 4K, 2K and HDCAM, using the latest cameras are given.

The course also covers the entire range of latest work-flows involving.

  • Pure celluloid domain

  • Celluloid to digital domain

  • Pure digital domain and

  • Digital to Celluloid domain and

  • New media domain.

The aim of the course is to help create a Cinematographer who is aesthetically prepared to build the visual structure of the film in terms of tonality, contrast, texture, composition and depth. Not only are prevalent and popular Cinematographic styles analysed and explained, but the general principles which allow each individual to create their own style are also taught.

Each Cinematography Student is assigned to a Directors Unit and he or she is expected to perform as a team member in those exercises designated as Unit exercises. We expect the Cinematography student to collaborate closely with their respective Directors and also with Production Designers to help realize the Directorial vision.

The Digital Academy one year Post Graduate Diploma Specialization Courses in Film and Television Direction, Cinematography, Editing and Sound Engineering & Recording are designed to foster innovation and creativity via the development of necessary intellectual and conceptual tools along with relevant practical training. Any practice in Cinema is governed by aesthetic goals and philosophical considerations. Unlike many other institutions which treat Cinema practice as a kind of mechanical craft, we at DA encourage our students to develop a sound theoretical and aesthetic body of knowledge which can help them to solve creative problems under various circumstances. In short, our courses are designed to not only tell you what to think but also teach you how to think.

We recognize that creativity especially in the field of Cinema is inextricably linked to technology and workflow methods. Our courses therefore are informed by the latest, state of the art technological developments as well as a sound preparation for the technologies of the future. At the heart of our courses is the core value which sees Cinema as a unique Art form. We recognize that whether one is making a feature film, a documentary, a short film, an Ad film, a Corporate or an infomercial, the common aesthetic of artistic Cinematic presentation is the necessary knowledge required by its practitioners. We therefore endeavor to prepare our students as artists / technicians who are capable of not only joining Cinema practice as it stands today but are also capable of handling the vicissitudes of the future.

The one year full time specialization courses are conducted by DA and are accredited by the University of Westminster; United Kingdom. These courses have been accredited as 120 level 4 credits and 60 level 5 credits, which is equivalent to the first half of the UK honours degree.
