Even though Sound came later in Cinema, it is now an essential element of the Cinematic language. Today we just cannot think of Cinema or Television or any other media without Sound. Starting from simple optical recordings in the 1930's today sound has really come of age and audiences around the world are thronging the theatres to hear that wonderful immersive and realistic surround sound. Even home entertainment is nowadays pretty close the to the big theatre experience.
All film theory now includes Sound as an essential element of the cinematic image. Audio literacy is as important to film students as visual literacy. The entire world of Studio Sound Recording, Sync Sound recording, Audio Post Processing, Track Laying and Mixing is a highly exciting field and providing excellent career opportunities to Students. Of course, like all other fields in Cinema, Sound Recording, Sound Designing and Sound Mixing is both an Aesthetic Artistic activity as well as that of high technical skill.
Starting from basic concepts of sound in Physics the syllabus covers comprehensive theoretical and practical areas to eventually arrive at complex concepts of sound design and meaning making. The practical training in sound includes -

We expect the students to look at Sound Acquisition as a creative activity akin to Image acquisition. Special emphasis is given within the course to being able to record clean sound in hostile conditions at various locations.
Overall, an attempt is made to help students become complete professionals who can deal with all stages of audio related operations be it acquisition, Sound Design and Final Sound Mixing.
The Digital Academy one year Post Graduate Diploma Specialization Courses in Film and Television Direction, Cinematography, Editing and Sound Engineering & Recording are designed to foster innovation and creativity via the development of necessary intellectual and conceptual tools along with relevant practical training. Any practice in Cinema is governed by aesthetic goals and philosophical considerations. Unlike many other institutions which treat Cinema practice as a kind of mechanical craft, we at DA encourage our students to develop a sound theoretical and aesthetic body of knowledge which can help them to solve creative problems under various circumstances. In short, our courses are designed to not only tell you what to think but also teach you how to think.
We recognize that creativity especially in the field of Cinema is inextricably linked to technology and workflow methods. Our courses therefore are informed by the latest, state of the art technological developments as well as a sound preparation for the technologies of the future. At the heart of our courses is the core value which sees Cinema as a unique Art form. We recognize that whether one is making a feature film, a documentary, a short film, an Ad film, a Corporate or an infomercial, the common aesthetic of artistic Cinematic presentation is the necessary knowledge required by its practitioners. We therefore endeavor to prepare our students as artists / technicians who are capable of not only joining Cinema practice as it stands today but are also capable of handling the vicissitudes of the future.
The one year full time specialization courses are conducted by DA and are accredited by the University of Westminster; United Kingdom. These courses have been accredited as 120 level 4 credits and 60 level 5 credits, which is equivalent to the first half of the UK honours degree.
