Digital Design students learn to design pieces that are both compelling and have purpose. Using live video, Flash, animation, and print, students create client-driven projects including TV commercials, branding guides, children’s books, music videos and websites.

Overview: 75% practical training, 25% theoretical inputs

Syllabus

Term 1

History and Appreciation of Art

A series of lecture studies and discussions exploring artistic movements of the 20th Century, from the English Arts and Crafts Movement through to the Post Modernist 80s and 90s and beyond. Learn how sociological and political circumstances influence all major visual design epochs- field trips

Storyboarding

Storyboarding is the visual format of a story idea presented and followed throughout the animation and/or film process. Learn to express ideas visually using proper film terminology, labeling, and presentation. Study basic storytelling principles and learn to illustrate camera angles through drawing, composition, and perspective in order to create mood and emotion.

Visual Communication 1

Visual Communication is the art of presenting complex information or concepts in a visually engaging manner. Build creative and innovative solutions to information design problems through conceptual development, structure and delivery of messaging, typographical layout, and image creation.

2D Graphics

Discover digital imaging for print and web publishing, using both Adobe Photoshop and Corel draw. Practice photo-retouching, color correcting, blending and compositing images, applying filters and adding text to an image.

Web Authoring

Cover fundamental topics in HTML and web publishing. Gain an understanding of tags, browser quirks and differences, and the importance of coding to standards of accessibility and browser compatibility.

Project Management

The design world is largely team-driven. Develop the tools to work as an effective member of project teams, including team building, effective professional communication skills, and time management.

Term 2

Contemporary Design – screenings, seminars & guest lectures

Animated movies and advertisement screenings followed by group discussions.

3D Graphics (I)

Learn the fundamentals of creating graphics in 3D space, including modeling, animation, lighting, and rendering using a professional 3D software solution,

Flash Development (I)

Gain the core Macromedia Flash techniques needed to deliver exciting interactive projects using animation, and other technologies. Apply these skills by researching a particular news event and creating a piece of interactive presentation built in Flash that enables the user to gain a deeper understanding of the subject than would be possible with a simple news story.

Motion Design (I)

Motion design marries graphics art and video production, and can be found in title sequences, advertising, info-graphics, and music videos. Discover the industry standard techniques of pre-production, cameras and lighting, location sound procedures, sound effects, and the basics of ADR and voice-over recording. Create a product commercial and a short narrative using Adobe's Premiere Pro and After Effects.

Motion Design (II)

Focus on broadcast standard Motion Graphics development in audio and video by pitching a media project, producing a plot diagram and shot list, and gaining hands-on skills in camera operations, lighting instruments, lighting techniques, and blue/green screen production. Create a live video with composites of CG graphics, as well as a character animation with sound. Acting for animation.

Term 3

3D Graphics (II) & Game Design

Take the skills learned in 3D Graphics 1 and put them to use by crafting detailed and realistic products and putting graphics in motion.

Flash Development (II)

Move beyond the desktop and learn how to use mobile technology to solve problems. Topics include connecting to web services, creating a development plan, and scripting.

Branding

An effective branding strategy can mean the difference between the success or failure of even the most useful products and services. Learn techniques such as the creation of style guides and logos, and develop an understanding of brand conceptualization, integrity, and implementation.

Commercial Production (compositing)

An introduction to the After Effects 3D layer mode. Work your 2D graphics with cameras and lights inside a true 3D environment, learn how to work with compositions of different sizes, and understand the ways of integrating footage between Premiere and AE. Learn to use typography, graphic elements, photography and/or video, and rhythm and timing to create integrated high-quality animations. Develop and produce professional quality info-graphics and a title sequence for a film.

Term 4

Advanced 2D Graphics (Elective)

Learn advanced tools and techniques to create professional design assets, as well as workflows to make work faster and more efficient.

Advanced 3D Graphics (Elective)

Use 3D software to enhance techniques and workflows in creating professional assets, with a focus on workflows which apply to designers rather than traditional 3D artists or animators. Course includes mentored lab time to address key questions on problem-solving for 3D assets in students' final projects.

Advanced Compositing (Elective)

Build on skills in creating realistic FX learned in Motion Design 2 and Commercial Production 3 by exploring advanced filters in compositing techniques, including particle synthesis FX such as Radio waves, Wave World and Particle Playground. Experiment with 3D space and light, 3D camera and camera data, expression controls, and math functions.
