Kung Fu also spelled as Gung Fu is a generic term for martial arts originating in China. A direct translation of the term would be “hard work, effort or a man of great skill” but in fact it is a misnomer, as kung fu can refer to the mastery by an individual of any kind of skill, for instance, if someone’s calligraphy is superb, we may conclude that this person is very kung fu in penmanship, Kung Fu therefore can be referred right from flower arranging to martial arts.
Hence kung fu as a specific term can be used as synonymous to Wu Shu (martial arts). However the term was not used regularly until the early Ming dynasty i.e. 14th century A.D. Shaolin is a subset of kung fu that was studied in temples around 500 A.D. until the destructions of the temples in the early 1920’s.
On the other hand the actual Chinese term for martial arts is wu shu, which denotes military art “wu” means militaristic and “shu” means techniques. Wu shu is a unique fighting form which is quite different from karate, tae kwun do and judo.
