Fashion Business Management

ISDI’s Fashion Business Management programme prepares graduates and young professionals for the increasingly competitive and innovative fashion and retail industries. With emphasis on leadership and innovation, Fashion Business Management seeks to immerse students in understanding the framing of the fashion industry as an interconnected marketplace housing  a robust ecosystem.  The programme addresses the evolving land space of the fashion industry from a glocal perspective, as it relates to fashion systems within the context of design based business practice.

As we approach the second generation of globalisation, fashion markets continue to expand exponentially. Evolutions of design methodologies, business ecologies, complex global supply chains, and media innovations have created new career spheres spanning a broad range of specializations. With the substantial advancements that have taken place in regards to the sourcing, supply and production aspects of fashion and the transition of fashion into a global industry, it is appropriate to follow a curriculum that will rigorously develop a diverse student body who ultimately will become industry leaders in the field. Such leaders, when armed with the appropriate tools and knowledge, have the capacity to influence and transform current systems into sustainable future frameworks.

FBM Course Module

Fashion System Orientation

Fashion Industry Profile

This course is an introduction to the fashion industry. It provides students with an in depth overview of the industry structure and the interrelationships between the primary, secondary, and auxiliary markets. Students learn the necessary terminology used in the fashion industry.

 

Fashion Trending and Forecasting

The goal of the module is to study the upcoming trends in the fashion industry. Through this subject we attempt to teach the students to project past trends into the future developments by watching for signals of change in the current situations. Fashion forecasting helps a designer to understand the upcoming market and mould his/her ideas to suit the future tastes and preferences.

 

Fashion Product Knowledge

Fashion merchandising is an area of the fashion industry that requires specialized knowledge related to the product and its development. It aims to make the students well versed with garment details and material studies along with production methods, production systems and production machinery and also about quality assurance techniques.

Fashion History Couture & Culture –Post Industrial Revolution

19th and 20th century fashion is studied through an examination of the influences of history, literature, politics, media, psychology and culture. Students study the history and meaning of dress and the development and practice of style.

The module focuses on defining, analyzing and interpreting fashion through a diversity of mediums including popular culture, cinematic images, literature, contemporary art, new media and critical theory.

Elements of Design

This course is a total immersion in the understanding and usage of different elements like colour, silhouettes in Fashion .Students analyze the cultural, social and psychological implications of color in everyday life. Critical theory is addressed in readings.

 

Fashion Textile Study

This module provides a comprehensive survey of woven and knitted fabrics used in apparel design. Students learn to identify fabric structures and evaluate their performance. This course will examine fibre types, yarns, constructions and finishes, as well as the technology used to create them.

 

Digital Platforms

This module provides the fundamentals of computer-aided design used by leading apparel and textile companies. All functions including knits, watercolour prints and drawing techniques will be covered.

Fashion Markets

Process Drawing & Digital Presentation

This module examines fundamental marketing concepts in the fashion marketing environment. Students explore consumer insights, positioning, competitive advantage and channel decisions from both a theoretical and practical approach. Students analyze and identify target markets and become aware of key marketing decisions as they develop a global marketing plan for a fashion company.The application of marketing theory is investigated among both small and large companies in a domestic and global context. It is designed to develop an in depth understanding of all aspects of advertising promotion for the fashion industry.

 

Branding & Luxury Brand Management

This module examines branding and the ways that brands acquire and sustain value in the marketplace. Brand equity is among a firm's most valuable assets and one of the most important aspects of marketing today. This module also focuses on the challenges of luxury brand management, exploring how successful marketers go about developing and managing successful brands.

 

Fashion Buying & Retail Merchandising

This module provides principles, procedures, and applications involved in successful retailing. It is an extensive examination and study of the functions and structures of retailing and how they serve society. Students explore promotion, global retailing, location, image development and explore new technologies used in successful retail organizations. The module enables students to examine the role of a merchandiser within a fashion company. The students learn about the merchandiser's planning, editing, and pricing strategies. They learn firsthand what it takes for a merchandiser to cost fashion apparel profitably through garment costing exercises. The student gains an appreciation of the core nature of merchandising in fashion and its dynamic character.


Visual Merchandising

This module will provide the fundamental principles and techniques relating to visual merchandising from exterior window designs to internal shop floor layouts understanding plannograms, and visual merchandising as a powerful marketing technique.

Social Commerce

Online retailing and social media marketing are fundamental topics in the fashion industry. Students will explore key strategies retailers and designers take in selling online, from merchandising, distribution and supporting technology to social communication strategies and tools. New media has created space for web-based publications, new business models and an immediate global reach for brands. The course explores how the changing face of retail is meeting the instant demand and evolving culture of communication technology.

Fashion Global Leadership

Business studies & Entrepreneurship- Strategic Design Management

The module provides the students with an opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge about Entrepreneurship. The students will have the opportunity to explore the various techniques to bring up their dream enterprise to life. It aims to learn how to set up an enterprise and also how to prepare a business plan. That will also give an insight on how to develop necessary skills and capabilities like team-building, leadership, motivation, commercialization of the business idea. The students will learn how to form an appropriate business module for an enterprise in design. It also accommodates the much required corporate social responsibility activities. It guides the students to think of innovative and sustainable techniques to run a successful business. It involves indentifying problems, working in a team to overcome such problems and become efficient leaders.

 

EXIM - Sourcing & Outsourcing- Documents & Policies

The students need to understand the global markets to flourish in the field of fashion. Fashion is not restricted by geographical borders and has its impact worldwide. By learning about the global markets the students get a fair idea about how to market products what cater to the international audience as well.

Sourcing and Outsourcing: It is important for a student to make their products in the most cost effective manner. This can be achieved either by identifying the main sources for the material or by outsourcing a part of the entire process. Sourcing and outsourcing helps in forming a business that can be highly profitable.

 

Professional Practices: Ethics & Laws in the Fashion Industry

This module exposes students to the new complexities and intricacies information as products, productive processes, and production modes in their own right. Some of the more interesting and controversial course topics will focus on the eclectic and diversified public, private, and mixed governance structures for Intellectual Property and Intellectual Property Protection, Security, Privacy, as well as the practices of firms with regards to regulatory opportunism, regulatory, capture, and regulatory arbitrage. The regime is transforming and the rules and assumptions are shifting. The astute managers of design-intensive firms must learn how to act expediently and effectively in behalf of their clients and their proper firms. Students will be learning the various angles of a quickly complicating regime via case studies, role play, and moot court trials.

 

Sustainable Fashion Systems

For sustainability it is important to carry out actions in an ethical manner adhering to the laws laid out by various national and international bodies. The students will get to study about the ethics involved and the laws that regulate the work in the fashion industry.

Eco-literacy helps in making the students knowledgeable about how their actions affect the ecology. It aims to make the students ideas not just sustainable but also environmentally friendly. This focuses to prepare the students to think of new ways of production and marketing.

 

Internships
Students will be offered opportunities with some of the most creative organizations in Mumbai students can gain work experience while exploring potential career paths.

 

Fashion Thesis

The thesis is 50 page paper that demonstrates original research in an area of fashion business studies. Students develop a thesis subject and research framework during the course in consultation with a faculty member/s who may also serve as thesis advisor/s.The thesis is written under the direct supervision of an assigned thesis advisor, and the student may also consult with other faculty members as required by their topic.

 

Entrance Exam

All Candidates interested in pursuing full time Under Graduate Diploma Programmes, Post Graduate Diploma Programmes and Post Graduate Certificate Programmes are required to complete out Entrance Test known as the ISDI Challenge.

The ISDI Challenge is an adapted version of the Parsons Challenge and it helps the Admission Committee understand how a prospective student develops ideas, translates them to good design and form, communicates that , and defends the work in writing

These challenges take on a special urgency in India, where a growing population and a rapidly evolving society can benefit from design intervention.

The Indian School of Design and Innovation (ISDI), which opens its doors to students in July 2013, is committed to a new educational model inspired by the idea of design and innovation as transformative forces in society.

Located in the dynamic coastal city of Mumbai, ISDI offers a series of globally benchmarked Undergraduate Diploma Programmes (UGDP), four year intensive programmes (foundation year plus three year specialisation) for students across the disciplines of fashion, interior, product and communication design. Opportunities to engage in design education for graduates and young professionals start in September 2013, with the launch of ISDI’s one year Post Graduate Programme (PGP).

ISDI has entered into a collaboration with Parsons The New School for Design, a global leader in design education, which will enable ISDI to benefit from Parsons’ rigorous curriculum, prominent visiting faculty, well established student exchanges and global relationships.
