FAQ

1) What is the Degree option available in the field of Graphics and Animation? Ans. Earlier, Animation was not a very organized field of career and an art or skill familiar with only a few. However, today with the technological development in this field and the increased applications & uses of Animation & graphics in practically all spheres of life, everyone, including Govt. & Universities have taken a note of it and have introduced formal Degree Programmes which focuses on all that there is to be learned in this area.
Today many universities offer Degree in Animation which is a 3 year Govt. recog Degree program. So, a Degree would be called as a B.Sc. in Visual Media, B.Sc. in Media Graphics & Animation, B.A. in Animation and many such degrees.

2) Is this Degree Govt recognised? Which university? What is the duration?

Ans.Yes, as we just mentioned, the Degree offered by Universities are Govt. recognized. Which means that this Degree is on par with any other Degree that every college also offers. This Degree is offered by Universities like Annamalai, YCMOU, SMU etc. under the Distance Education mode. Lectures are however conducted at the official Study / Learning center. Centers conducts practical lectures for the students at their own venue. Exams are however conducted by the University, semester-wise or annually. For that also, the student does not have to travel anywhere, he is given the facility to appear for the exams within the city itself.
Although the duration of the Degree program is 3 years, many universities also offer Diploma & Advanced Diploma at the end of the first & second year respectively. This thus ensures that even if due to some circumstances, a student cannot complete the entire tenure, he still gets a Diploma or Advanced Diploma.

3) What is the eligibility? Diploma holders can also apply? Is Sketching and Drawing an essential skill required by a student?

Ans.His actual eligibility is his interest and aptitude for the subject. However, technical eligibility for a student to apply is a 12th std passed from any discipline. Thus a student applying for BCA for eg can be a student from Arts / Science / or Commerce stream. Even a student, who has not completed his 12th, but has directly enrolled for technical Diploma of 3 years duration which is Govt. recognized or a Diploma from a Govt. Institute or Univ. is also eligible.
Although Animation was and still is a creative field, there are many animators who are not at all good artist. We cannot deny that a student who excels in sketching & drawing definitely has an edge over the other students, but it has also been observed that Continuous practice and hard work has also paid off for students by way of excellent placements

5) What are the future trends in the Animation industry? What would be the industry scenario in the next 3-5 years?

Ans. Animation Industry: Today animation industry in India is one of the most dynamic and fast emerging industries in the market. The Indian animation market is estimated to be worth USD 460 mn in 2008 and is expected to reach USD 1192 mn by 2012. India is also on the way of becoming a preferred destination for animation outsourcing and is expected to overtake Philippines, Korea and Taipei in the race. It is budding as an outsourcing hub for animation and special effects. A large number of international media companies are entering with their animation studios in the Indian market.
India also has a strong hold in video games market where animation and special effects are used at large. The video game market in India is growing rapidly which makes the prospects of animation industry brighter. Today India has a large number of animation studios which cater the clients around the world including the prestigious Walt Disney, Warner Brother, Imax and Sony.
The trends of animation repeatedly have been changing as per the taste and likings of the audience. But today, the animation industry has strengthened its sustenance by increasing its contribution in every industry. Over the years, its demand has increased with inception of gaming and film industry, or in the naval field, it is used for preparing ship’s models. Also, in the medical field and astronomy, animation has better uses that help explain different concepts and techniques in the better way

The global entertainment industry is projected to reach US$ 1.8 trillion by 2015. The Indian Media And Entertainment industry is expected to grow at an annual growth rate of 19% to reach Rs 83,740 crore by 2010

6) What are the various applications of Animation? Where all is Animation used today?

Ans. Today there are practically no areas / industries where Animation is not used in one way or the other. From Advertising, Entertainment both Films / Television, Architectural, Medical, Education, Aeronautics, Engineering, Printing, Communication, to Mobile application and Gaming , all these industries use Animation.
Hence, all these are possible areas where an Animator has a scope to work with. He has the choice, in fact, to select the specific industry that he is inclined. As animation includes Modeling, texturing, Lighting, Rigging, Animation, Visual Effects and Editing, a student can specialize in any one or more of the above modules depending on his aptitude.

7) What are the pay packages available?

Ans. Although the beginning salary for Animation Graduates would be anywhere between 10-12000 per month for freshers, the growth in this industry is exponential. A student who starts his career with Rs.10000 can easily be earning Rs.30-35000/- pm within 2-3 years. Onwards the growth keeps happening as his experience grows.

8) People say that Animation being a creative field, it does not matter whether a person does a Degree or not. His work has to be good. Is this right? Why is Degree important?

Ans. Although the work that he does determines his standing in the market, his Degree is very essential when it comes to a position , status or growth in the promotion ladder. In case of two individuals having the same caliber, preference will be given to the candidate who is a Graduate when it comes to promotion. Another point to note is that, as Animation Degree is a specialized course over 3 years, a student is exposed to all facets of the industry. He learns all the subjects which are relevant to his Degree. Although he may specialize in one particular module, he knows all the other aspects of Animation work cycle. In todays times of multitasking, companies prefer candidates who can for eg be a modelor and a texture artist and can do visual effects also. He thus does not become redundant with a change in the work profile due to his versatility.

9) How much time needs to be invested for doing this degree? R lectures through correspondence or online?

Ans. He needs to invest 6 hours a week, to do this degree program. Although in this industry, practice plays a major role in the final output. He therefore needs more time to hone his skills by regular practice. Lectures are neither online nor through correspondence, but are practical classes. In other Degree programmes, there is a option of online lecture support which a student can avail of if he is working and therefore cannot spare time. But as Animation is a to be learned only on computer with specific animation software, there is little theory and more practical study. Classes are conducted at the Study centers. Exams are practical as well as theory which comprises of objective questions to gauge the knowledge of the basic concepts.

10) Can a student do dual qualification- regular degree through college and this Specialized Career Degree? What is the advantage?

Ans. Job opportunities are plenty for dual degree holders. If you have a degree in two related subjects, then that shows how focused and determined you are towards your goal.It will make you a specialist. On the other hand, if you have two degrees in different domain, then that helps you in exploring your career in two diverse fields. You gain knowledge in two disciplines which can help you in broadening your knowledge base.

The job market will be delighted here as the student will have a regular degree, say in commerce or science and have their basics in place. Normally any firm picks up such students and trains them in their specific interest like IT. Here they might pick up a commerce student with a dual degree in IT and save a lot of time and money on training as well as fulfill their criteria..
