1. What is Software Testing? Is it only about finding errors?
Ans. Software testing, now days, is not only about finding defects. Finding defects is one of the tasks but apart from that we need to ensure if the software is as per the set guidelines, requirement. Is it following the set standards by the customer, is it meeting the end user criteria, how is the software from the end user perspective. So, you can see, it is more than just finding errors.
2. What are the different phases of test life cycle?
Ans. The whole testing life cycle can be divided into 4 phases:
a. Initiation – Gathering of requirements, analysis, etc
b. Planning – Planning the testing operations (software/hardware/test environment), schedule, resourcing, skills required, etc
c. Execution – Executing the testing
d. Closure – End game or closing activities such as new learnings, performance, project end reviews, etc
3. Can one go from Development background to Testing or vice versa?
Ans. YES, you can switch from development to testing or testing to development. However, to move into development in a particular domain, you need to have the basic knowledge of the same. If you have a development, programming, networking, or any other kind of background, it will be a plus point for you if you choose to move into testing. As the knowledge you have from development end will help you in excelling in the testing field.
4. What is the Career growth in Testing?
Ans. a. Software Engineer trainee or junior software test engineer
b. Senior Software test engineer – 2-3 years as Software test engg and certification
c. Test Lead ¬¬– 5-7 yrs of exp
d. Senior Test Lead – 6-8 yrs of exp
e. Test Manager/Senior test manager – 8-12 yrs of exp
f. Project Director (PD)
g. Delivery Head (DH)
h. Vice President (VP), Testing services.
The posts of PD, DH, and VP, which is something cannot be there is all the organizations but you would find these posts in the major organizations, where testing is part of the service they provide.
Again, above mentioned roles can be different in different organizations but generally it is the same.
5. What is the minimum qualification needed for testing.
Ans. The minimum qualification needed is simple graduation in any field, with a testing course (like STP), and an ISTQB foundation level certification is an advantage.
6. Which is the most popular and recognizer certification for testing?
Ans. It is called ISTQB (International Software Testing Qualification Board). There are 3 levels; Foundation (Basic), Advanced, and Expert levels. Online exams are conducted all over India by Indian Testing Board, which is affiliated to ISTQB.
7. What is the salary range for different roles in testing?
Ans. Given below is the general pay package. Note that this can change depending on the organization. So, below is the general data.
a. Software Engineer trainee or junior software test engineer – Anywhere between 1.8 to 3 L per annum
b. Senior Software test engineer – Anywhere between 3.5 to 5 L per annum
c. Test Lead ¬¬– Anywhere between 6 to 8 L per annum
d. Senior Test Lead – Anywhere between 7 to 11 L per annum
e. Test Manager/Senior test manager – Anywhere between 12 to 15 L per annum.
