Prior to the advent of the Internet, GIS technology, like other software technologies, was limited to the domain of desktop, workstation and in limited cases, server-based computing platforms. The physical restrictions of these computing platforms confined GIS to only supporting the evolution of project and departmental GIS and limited impact to the public. Over the last ten years the GIS community has become increasingly focused on the dissemination of GIS data and functionalities within, as well as outside of, organizations. An important breakthrough in this research was the deployment of GIS data, functionality in the Internet, World Wide Web, and private intranets and is sometimes termed as WebGIS.
WebGIS is platform independent and does not have any location restrictions and not depends upon any specific software like GIS; world wide users can use it. It can also be used by any number of users and possible to perform map making, analysis concurrently. It provides new concepts of GIS web service by using Web Map Service (WMS) and Web Feature Service (WFS) standards that are designed to allow any internet user to access spatial and temporal data to create customized maps and perform analysis. So, users can save their valuable time and effort without collecting, maintaining huge amount of spatial data for map making and analysis purposes.
Now, two most important questions will arise (a) why do we build WebGIS applications? and (b) who should be involved in building WebGIS applications? The answer of former is so many governments, private and non-profit organizations or even universities promote their GIS activities on the Web for either freedom of geospatial information to all or to sell their data, map, location-based products and services to the wider range of users, planners and decision makers on demand. To answer the latter, any GIS users (from end users to specialists, developers or researchers), IT professionals, web designer and developer, planners and management decision makers or individuals from any other related fields can be involved in building WebGIS application.

Computer Aided Design (CAD) Centre
The Computer Aided Design (CAD) Centre is one of the pioneering institutions of eastern India for training, research, and consultancy services in the emerging areas that it embraces. The Centre functions under the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Jadavpur University, Kolkata. In the year 2010, it has reached to its 25 years of academic and research excellence.
Feeling the dearth of educational and research facilities, and implementation of new generation technologies the Centre has come up as a state-of-the-art institution for education and research in order to cater to the requirement of emerging technologies like CAD, Multimedia and Animation, Geographic Information Science, and Remote Sensing. Since its inception in 1985 the Centre has generated an immense amount of goodwill in its areas of expertise. The Centre has trained a large number of researchers, academicians, professionals, and students in the preceding technological fields, who have been successful in implementing their training to their work areas.
