Eligibility:
(Pre-requisites)

A minimum 50% in graduation, which must be completed by June 2013.
Should have taken CAT (2013) conducted by the IIMS for the year specified in the advertisement (IIMS have no role in the Welingkar admission process) and /or/ XAT (2014) / and / or ATMA (2013-2014) and / or CMAT (2013-2014) and / or Mh-CET (2014).

The program is aimed at providing to the industry a professional who can adapt to the fast changing world of retail.
Some of the specialized courses taught include - Retail Store Operations, Retail Selling Skills, Consumer Buying Behavior, Franchising, Retail Law, Buying & Merchandising, Category Management, Visual Merchandising, International Retail and Retail Strategy.

On successful completion of the program, besides a career in the retail sector, this program also provides a solid foundation for employment in any industry which interfaces with retailers.
The PGDM Retail Management course aims at providing a comprehensive view of retailing, an analysis of the retail environment and exposure to issues and developments in the industry. Retailing is changing today, and the business environment demands professionals with an ability to learn new skill sets, adapt and think out of the box. This comprehensive training program provides the student with advanced theoretical inputs and also the applications in the business.

Some of the specialized courses taught include - Retail Store Operations, Retail Selling Skills, Consumer Buying Behaviour, Franchising, Retail Law, Buying & Merchandising, Category Management, Visual Merchandising, International Retail and Retail Strategy.

The students of the retail programme also have the opportunity of participating in several prestigious student competitions like the The Retail Futures Challenge at the World Retail Congress. WE SCHOOL was the only Indian B-School that was selected to participate in this competition on a global platform for three years in a row. At the Retail Futures Challenge held in Berlin, 2010 our students won the first prize for visual merchandising at the competition. The concept chosen was "Mumbai MeriJaan" showing the different themes of Mumbai city such as Bollywood [the Indian Film Industry], Chow patty[A popular beach] and the local trains.

Program Overview

The Program in Retail Management combines disciplines of Business Management and super-specializes in Retail Management. It provides a unique blend of academic prowess of Welingkar and practical rigor of the industry .The learning process involves advanced training in theory and applications in the retailing business.

This program provides students the skills, creativity and knowledge to understand retailing as a business management discipline. In the first nine months, the student will gain a thorough foundation in general business management and retail modules. The second year involves class room learning with strong focus on retail. During the course of the program, the students are allowed to choose their specialization of Marketing, Operations, Finance and HR and learn the elements of retail pertinent to their chosen field of specialization.

The academic content is designed to provide knowledge of business management in general and retail management in particular. The program is supported by practical assignments and case studies. Teaching methods include lectures, workshops, field trips, and assignments.

Programme Duration & Breakup

The Post Graduate Diploma in Retail Management is a two year full time Masters level program covered in six trimesters with two month summer internships.

The first year comprises of three trimesters followed by a two month summer internship project. The second year also comprises of three trimesters. This programme while developing students in the areas of General Management also develops them in areas of Retail Management.

The programme comprises of a total of 53 credits.
The credits in the first year are 28.5
The credits in the second year are 24.5

Student Assessment / Evaluation

Student assessment is done by way of quizzes, surprise tests, presentation of case studies and end term written exams.

The methodology of assessment is defined in the Teaching Learning Plan given to the students at the beginning of the term. This method of assessment is similar to the assessment system followed by the institute.

Selection Process

The Selection process is divided into two stages.

Will apply for all students who submit their completed application forms with the requisite documents within the time specified by the Institute.

Written Test Score (WT)

The Institute, basis of the percentile provided by the student, will assign a score out of 140 using a statistical normalization process. In case, the student has given multiple test percentiles, the highest will be considered.
Students should note that percentile and percentage are not the same.
Past academic record (PAR)
The marks assigned for past academic record include marks for percentage obtained in Class 10, Class 12, Graduation and Post Graduation (if applicable). In case a student is appearing for Graduation or Post Graduation, the percentage column will be blank. Students must not enter an aggregate of previous years
Documents to be enclosed along with completed application for academic results are:

  • Attested copy of Mark sheet of Class 10, 12, Graduation, Post Graduation (whichever applicable)

  • Attested copy of Graduation and Post Graduation Certificate.

Applications not having the above documents will not be given marks for Past Academic Record. Maximum Marks in this section is 15.

Work Experience (WE)
In Stage I, Marks assigned for work experience is on the basis of duration of work experience only. Only full-time work experience, after completing graduation will be considered.

Documents to be enclosed along with completed application for persons with work experience are:

  • Experience letter or a combination of Appointment letter and latest salary slip for the current organization working

  • Experience letter or a combination of Appointment and Relieving letter for all previous jobs mentioned.

The maximum marks in this parameter is 15. In the absence of the above documents marks will not be given for the work experience claimed by the student.
ANY false claim / fake documents being submitted will be automatically disqualified from the Selection Process and no appeal will be entertained in this regard.

The total score of 170 in Stage I will then be used to shortlist students for Stage II of the Selection process. Therefore ALL applicants will not be called for Stage II. Students should note that being called for Stage II is dependant on 3 parameters as mentioned above and not only on the Written Test Score. Hence a specific percentile cut-off for being invited to Stage II does not apply.

Stage I of selection process will be the same for the students applied for PGDM / PGDM e-Business / PGDM Business Design / PGDM Retail Management (Executive Program with Pantaloon).

Stage II:

Only Students shortlisted from Stage I will go through Stage II. Stage II comprises of the following parameters

Stage II comprising of the above evaluation parameters will be conducted at the choice of GD/PI Centers provided by the Institute.

All applicants going through Stage II will go through all the parameters mentioned above. However students applying for Business Design will undertake an individual activity, preceding the Personal interview –II that is aimed to enable the candidate to creatively express himself/herself with the medium assigned to him/her. This self expression would be discussed during the interview. The interview would also be used as a mechanism to judge such other design competencies as observation, empathy, creativity, spotting opportunities, visualization among other aspects.

The Extracurricular activities and Essay Questions will be reviewd in the Personal Interviews; hence students are advised to respond to them appropriately. Your response to the questions in the Application Form will play a significant role in your interviews.

Personal Interview I is aimed at evaluating the students from an overall perspective, and suitability and capability to pursue a management program.

Personal Interview II is aimed at judging the interest and aptitude of the students with reference to the programs indicated in the Preference section.

The Psychometric and Creativity test is a computer based test aimed at identifying your personality traits.

The final selection of the students is based on the overall performance on 400 marks.

Students will be offered admission to a program basis of their preference AND their suitability / fit with a program identified on the basis of their performance in the entire process.
