In recent years digital technology has revolutionized traditional art practices like drawing, painting and sculpture. Digital art is now used extensively in all media including advertising, film and television. FX School's Diploma Course in Digital Art is designed to help you master digital art and design for modern cinematic visual effects and animation films, games and graphic novels. The course comprises 3 months of Foundation, 3 months of Specialization and 2 Pro course modules of 3 months each.
Foundation (3 months)
The 3-month Foundation in Digital Media is designed to help you discover where your true talents lie and make an informed decision about what you should seriously pursue further. For more about the course content.
CG Animation: Learn the Maya interface, basic principles of animation, shading and lighting. Plus, learn how to create CG assets and work on animation exercises.
Introduction to Visual Effects: Learn key concepts, tools and techniques related to VFX, including an introduction to After Effects.
Basic Digital Photography: Learn the fundamentals of using digital SLRS, the rules of composition and essential Photoshop skills for processing and editing images.
Digital Filmmaking: Enter the world of cinema through an exploration of visual language. Learn the fundamentals of filmmaking with an emphasis on Aesthetics, Film History and Film Genre study.
Digital Art Fundamentals: Learn to create and work with primitive shapes; learn about lighting and shading, one and two-point perspectives and color theory.
The Foundation Course is an essential requirement before beginning the Specialization module. However, students with exceptional portfolios may join Specialization directly, with the permission of the faculty.
Specialization (3 months)
The Specialization module comprises intensive training in Visual Effects, CG Animation and Digital Art. You will acquire the fundamentals of concept art and matte paintings for the digital cinema. You will also develop crucial VFX skills such as masking, keying, compositing and 3D match moving and learn modeling, texturing, lighting, animation and rendering in CG.
Pro Courses
After completing the Foundation and Specialization modules, students need to complete a minimum of 2 out of the Pro modules listed below.
Pro Course in Environment Design (3 months)
The Pro Course in Environment Design helps you perfect your skills in matte painting and environment design. You will design key backgrounds and hook-up backgrounds and create matte paintings using photographs and digital painting. In addition, you will learn After Effects techniques to create animated backgrounds. The emphasis at this level is to help you hone and perfect your skills and develop portfolios that will ultimately open doors for you in the industry.
Pro Course in Character Design (3 months)
The Pro Course in Character Design enables you to visualize and create to highly sophisticated characters and concept art for feature films and graphic novels. The focus at this stage will be to help you build strong Character Design portfolios.
Pro Course in Graphic Novel Design (3 months)
The Pro Course in Graphic Novel Design teaches you visual storytelling skills in various panel formats and enables you to create your very own graphic novel. Students who have completed the Pro courses in Environment Design and Character Design will be eligible for this module.
