Overview, Content & Syllabus

The academic curriculum of Product Design at GD Goenka University allows students to easily blend into a global network while acquiring a greater appreciation of local industry trends. The multidisciplinary and broad based structure aims at an all round development. Deriving from the changing paradigms of industry and commerce, its content as well as the methodology has been designed to suit the need of the emerging sectors in design education. The teaching staff shall be a mix of professional and entrepreneurial sectors making a fundamental contribution to the Indian & Global Design culture. A number of entrepreneurs, experts, designers, project professionals, craftsmen and personalities in the fields of services & culture as well as of professional associations shall contribute to the team of teachers and play an essential role in the education program.

The UG program in Product Design will impart strong knowledge of formal and functional product representation (manual and technical drawing, photography, and three dimensional product modeling) and good grasp of the different techniques of production of digital images, visual languages, the perceptive mechanisms. Graduates will develop a firm understanding of technologies for the transformation of products into prototypes and after that their industrial production. Historical context and knowledge of traditional techniques are also important, allowing students to critically evaluate products and their evolution with an eye to semiotics and aesthetics, sociology and psychology. A project will allow the student to experience different parts of the development of a product and develop vital problem solving skills, thus ensuring that the graduate has the competencies to undertake various tasks, from product and system engineering to mass production and market penetration. The PG programme is orientated towards a strategic vision of innovation processes; focusing on the systemic effects of design acts and actions that are involved while defining a new product system or a new use scenario. Design research activities will be central to both understanding the design context will be central to both understanding the design context and developing new language, typologies, functions and new technological and material solutions that will shape the design proposal (problem solving)

Career Opportunities

The institute places very high importance on career plans of graduating students and thus has a fully functional training and placement division. This division is in constant networking with the industry, to open new avenues for the students in the professional & business structures of the fashion industry and their supply chains.

Product design or industrial design covers a much wider domain covering all mass-produced, daily life goods such as consumer durables, toys, FMCG, automobiles, helmets, kitchen or table-top products, phones or specialist products such as medical equipment. As these are complex products, product designers usually make their careers in large corporations, as part of a team, coordinating with others to shape products. Besides all automobile companies, all consumer goods companies and private design firms employ product designers. The institute works towards providing excellent career opportunities for students through campus placement.

Subject Specific Knowledge, Understanding and skills

On completion of the degree, students will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • The capacity to develop complex design strategies

  • The capacity to see and deal with the social, economic and environmental implications of the project and the context dynamics that it is going to modify;

  • The capacity to build design scenarios for mid- to long-term projects where the ability to draw the potential evolutionary trajectories of technological systems and their possible integration is crucial, together with the ability to define social and cultural dynamics in evolution;

  • The capacity to identify tools that make it possible to design not only on a product scale but also on a system scale (from concept to vision).

  • The capacity to integrate the technical, guided nature of the project development skills acquired at the UG level program with strategic, contextualized and decision-making skills.

  • The ability to research, analyze and understand the design context, recognizing its constraints, explore design opportunities, taking for granted an acquisition of the ability to recognize and deal with context limitations.

The admission will be based on performance in Design Aptitudes Test (DAT) followed by a personal interview.
