Learn the art and technique of film making with industry professionals
The workshop will cover basic aspects of direction, screenwriting, production, camera, lighting and editing. A unique programe where the participants will learn the art and technique of film-making hands-on under the guidance of industry experts. The program includes shooting a four minutes portfolio film by every participants.
Course Director: Luke Mendes (Luke Mendes holds a Post-Graduate degree in Cinematography, Cinema-Technique, Screenwriting (advanced) from the New York University. His short film “Dog Eat Dog”, produced, written and directed by him was the official entry at the Festival de Cannes ’07. It was also shortlisted in the LA Film Fest 2009.)

Luke Mendes
Luke Mendes holds a Post-Graduate degree in Cinematography, Cinema-Technique, Screenwriting (Advanced) from the New York University and in Film and TV from the Xavier Institute of Mass Communications, Mumbai.
Currently, he is the Writer-Director at Ekuldom Productions and Editor at Amaya Publishers. He has rich experience in working with Ad Films, was Partner/Director at Entertainment Factory and has been a Writer, Executive Producer and Assistant Director at UTV. He has also worked on projects for National Geographic and BBC.
His short film “Dog Eat Dog”, which he wrote, directed and produced, was the official selection at the Festival de Cannes ’07. It was also shortlisted in the LA Film Fest 2009. His documentary film “Bombay Bloos” was a high point of reference. It was well appreciated and has significantly contributed to the Clean Up campaign undertaken by the BMC.
Prof. Prashant Desai
Prof. Prashant Desai graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTI), Pune, in cinema with specialization in cinematography in 1982. Since then he has worked in the industry in various capacities - cinematographer, screenplay writer, producer and director. He has worked on various types of productions including Ad Films, Documentaries/Educational Films, Feature Films as well as Television shows/serials on national and international levels. His adventurous spirit and love for nature led him to work on wild life films as well.
He has taught at NID Ahmedabad and FTII Pune. At MIT Institute of Design, he held the position of HOD for two years. He has also taught at Xavier Institute of Communication, Mumbai where he was the joint course co-ordinator for a brief period of time. He has conducted workshops and lectured at Symbiosis Institute of Design, Pune, Indubhai Parekh School of Architecture, Rajkot, SIES College, Mumbai and Wigan & Leigh, Mumbai.

Introduction to film making course
Screenplay writing
•What is a screenplay and how it is written
Direction
• The Basics of Direction - Film, Theatre.
• The Executor of the Script / screenplay / stage play. The Captain of the Ship. [What does the 'Director' Need / what makes a good director].
• Understanding: Premise - Tone - Lighting - Shot size - Framing - Intent / intention - Actors: Strengths / weaknesses - Stage Blocking [Sound stage / Sets].
• Understanding the cause and effects of music in a dramatic curve.
• Interaction with students and role playing [Playing the Director].
Camera and lighting
• Detailing of Sony Z 7 HDV camera
• Introduction to lights
• Attributes of visual image
• Basic lighting techniques
• Exposure, focus, aperture, shutter, colour temp.
• Camera operation, framing, composition
• Independent lighting and camera operation.
Introduction to video editing
Principles of editing and the post-production workflow. Films shot for the assignment will be edited digitally with Final Cut Pro on Apple computers.
Assignment
At the end of the workshop each student must make his or her own short 3 minute film.
Final Screening and Portfolio
The short films by the students will be screened and critiqued in the class with the instructor. A certificate of participation will be issued by St Pauls Institute of Communication Education to the participants who successfully complete the course.
