St Pauls Institute of Communication Education (SPICE) offers a full-time course in journalism, leading to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism. The focus is upon preparing students for a career in journalism, with hands-on experience of the actual methodology of news-gathering, processing and production.
Built on the fundamental assets and resources that ST PAULS already has, including a publications division, audio-visual production house, and a printing press, plus a range of short and long term courses directly allied to careers in Media, the icing on the cake is the brand new building conveniently located in Bandra with state-of-the-art technology aimed at arming aspiring journalists with the right skills.
The curriculum for the course Diploma in Journalism has been developed keeping in mind the objective of training talented young people, with a penchant for communication, to become good, committed, knowledgeable journalists.

What you can expect to learn?
We seek to mold you in the art and the craft of Journalism. The core is the methodologies involved in identifying news, gathering information, writing the news, processing it and finally, presenting it.

You will learn how to do this for print journalism, and then how to adapt print needs across platforms and publications.

You will learn how to combine traditional and digital media to enhance your core capabilities as a journalist.

You will learn the role of visual design, through photography, graphics and page layouts.

You will learn how to re-read your city, society and the community, through special lectures on history, demographics, sociology and politics.
All this will come to you from teachers drawn from the industry - editors, journalists, reporters, sub-editors, photographers, art directors etc. They will impart to you their own experience along with the received wisdom collected over the years.
There will also be a range of lectures from guest and visiting faculty, chosen for their particular expertise in a field, from problems of urban housing to covering crime, from investigative reporting in a particular story to conflict reporting overseas, from Hard Talking a subject to doing fluff pieces on film stars and the glamour brigade.

Course Director
Ms Carol Andrade, Editor, Afternoon Dispatch & Courier, Media Educator
Carol Andrade is a veteran of the journalism scenario in Mumbai, having been in active journalism since 1974. She has worked with The Times of India, Mid-Day and The Afternoon Dispatch and Courier, as reporter, senior reporter, chief reporter. She was Editor of the TOI Group’s Metropolis on Saturday, then took over the Response Edit function (again in the TOI), to bring out their area specific supplements. At one point of time, she was in charge of all the supplements nationally, nearly 100 of them.
She has been teaching journalism for the past 14 years, at XIC and also at the NIEM. Her strength has been the ability to deal with both news and features equally well. She is also a great believer in the virtue of sub-editing over reporting.
She has held workshops and seminars on media for a wide range of audiences including IIT students, has traveled widely in India and abroad.
Currently, Carol Andrade is with The Afternoon Dispatch and Courier as the editor.
Methodology
Classroom lectures, practical assignments, both indoor and outdoor, experts-led workshops, in-house newspaper production, guest lectures, field visits, exposure to real-time news processes.
Structure
Largely modular, except for the core subjects like editing, reporting and writing news features, which will continue till it is felt that students have enough skills to benefit from the other modules.
Certificate
At the end of the programme, SPICE will award the successful students with a CERTIFICATE OF POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN JOURNALISM.
Selection
* Last date for receipt of duly completed applications: 10 July 2013
* Written test and Personal interview.
* Those selected for admission will be notified by the admissions committee within 4 days of the interview.
