Overview, Content & Syllabus

The course will help participants to develop their idea or concept into a commercially Viable screenplay over the course of eight weeks, and incorporates hands-on exercises, theory, and useful do's and don'ts. The course is designed for individuals new to the screen industry, as well as producers and directors seeking to develop their screen story skills and understanding of the writing process.

Course Syllabus

1. Introduction to writing, narration exercise and film appreciation.
2. Observation exercise: A good writer observes life since he/she is the one to capture that moment or event with his writing. Art Begets Life.
3. Structure of a narrative Objectively breaking down a screenplay / story to study its various graphs Character Action emotion -Turning points obstacles etc.
4. Character Analysis Study of character and what makes interesting characters in a play / screenplay / story.
5. Character Development: basic structuring of characters. Actors and powerful characters.
6. Mediums: Stage Cinema Television Radio street : Writing for the medium.
7. Start writing your screenplay Each student will be asked to write 10 pages a day for their first draft. Scene description, character description and action with dialogue to be done as an exercise.
8. Dialogue and Monologue [Internal & External]: Objectives of both.
9. Pitching your screenplay: Upside and downside of pitching. Visualizing your screenplay. Your final communication test.

Luke Mendes
Course Director

Luke Mendes holds a Post-Graduate degree in Cinematography, Cinema-Technique, Screenwriting(Advanced) from the New York University and in Film and TV from Xavier Institute of Mass Communications, Mumbai.

Currently, he is the Writer-Director at Ekuldom Productions and Editor at Amaya Publishers. He has rich experience in working with Ad Films, was Partner/Director at Entertainment Factory and has been a Writer, Executive Producer and Assistant Director at UTV. He has also worked on projects for National Geographic and BBC.

There was an official selection of his film “Dog Eat Dog”, at the Festival de Cannes ’07, which he wrote, directed and produced; it was also shortlisted in the LA Film Fest 2009.

Luke Mendes was associated with the performing arts; he has been an actor for more than 25 years, a singer since childhood and started to write and act for professional theatre from his college days. He is known for writing, directing and producing stageplays.

His documentary film “Bombay Bloos” was a high point of reference, well appreciated and has significantly contributed to the Clean Up campaign undertaken by the BMC.
