A little bigger in size (16" to 19") and lower in range than a violin, Viola is an important part of the string section in an orchestra. Viola has a perculiar melancholy timbre (quality of sound). Two violins, viola and cello form a typical string quartet. There is little solo music written for the viola but no classical orchestra and/or chamber music ensemble is complete without it.
