Warli derived its name from the tribe found on the northern peripheries of Mumbai. Warli painting is the tribal folk art of Warli tribes of Thane District, Maharashtra. It is believed to have originated in the 10th century. Warli is a pictorial language, a language of stories.

Lines, dots, triangles, circles are the basics of these drawings. These are known for its depiction of human figures and other images of nature in shadow form. Harvest is one of the major theme on which they elaborate to the maximum. The paintings typically depicts multitudes of tiny human forms. Hunting ,dancing, or cultivating the land against a backdrop of tribal huts done up in mustard yellow, black and white background. Besides marriage and harvest warli woman also decorate their huts on occasions like birth and death.
