Learned and gifted yogis have passed down this mantra for thousands of years: Take a deep breath and relax. Now Modern day researchers from the Harvard Medical School too have reiterated this fact. A study involving long-term practitioners of relaxation methods such as yoga and meditation has found that in these individuals, a higher extent of ''disease-fighting genes'' were found to be active, especially in comparison to those who did not indulge in any form of relaxation.
A significant find was that genes that offer the human body protection from serious disorders such as pain, infertility, high blood pressure and even rheumatoid arthritis were found to be active in these meditation practitioners. The one phenomenon, say researchers, that induced this sense of actual well-being was the ''the relaxation effect''. Researchers now recognize this as a spectacle that could prove to be as powerful as the most innovative medical drugs, but without the harmful and uncomfortable side effects that go along with them!
