About the Course: International Baccalaureate

The IB Diploma Program is a challenging two-year curriculum for high school students. Juniors and seniors take six courses in the following subject groups: language; second language; experimental sciences; the arts; math and computer science; and individuals and societies. IB students also engage in three core requirements: an extended essay (4,000 words); theory of knowledge (interdisciplinary course); and creativity, action, service (community service).

The IB Diploma Program helps you develop critical-thinking, independent learning, and research skills. IB courses aren’t about reciting facts and figures – the IB Diploma Program helps you learn how to learn, and appreciate the process.

This internationally recognized school system is made up of three educational programs

1. PYP: The Primary Years Program [Kindergarten to Class 5].

   3. Offers a model of assessment, which determines the student’s results by comparing their performance against set standards.

1. DP: The Diploma Program [Class 11 to Class 12].

   1. Includes six subject groups Three core requirements in addition to passing the subject group exams:

      3. Action and Service.

   2. Students are assessed in 2 ways:

      1. Internally- by teachers through oral exercises, presentations and performances and

      2. Externally – through extended essays, literature assignments, etc.

Subject Groups:

Group 1: Language - More than 80 languages have been offered as a language A1, with 45 being readily available for examination at both SL and HL

Group 2: 2nd Language - nearly 80 additional languages offered and may be studied at the following levels: A2 (SL or HL), B (SL or HL), or ab initio (SL only).

Group 3: Individuals and Societies - of nine courses offered at both the Standard level (SL) and Higher level (HL): Business and management, Economics, Geography, History, Information Technology in a Global Society, etc.

Group 4: Experimental Sciences - five courses, four of which are offered at both the Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) and one offered at SL only: Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Design Technology, and Environmental Systems SL.

Group 5: Mathematics and Computer Sciences - consist of four different mathematics courses and two computer science courses.

Group 6: The Arts - consist of four courses at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL): Music, Theatre, Visual Arts, and Film.

Subjects Tutored:

Biology: Biology has a greater focus on understanding and memorization of concepts. Students need to have a firm grasp of these concepts and be able to clearly explain them in the exam.

Chemistry: Particularly at Higher Level (HL), is arguably one of the most difficult science subjects. Students need a very precise understanding of concepts, as well as the ability to apply them. The IB also places great emphasis on definitions and these must be understood in detail.

Physics: Students studying IB Physics need to have strong problem solving abilities and a good grasp of solving linear equations. These skills must then be accompanied by a strong understanding of the concepts in physics and the ability to apply them.

Design Technology: It focuses on the science of the design and manufacture of products. Students need to have a strong grasp of the theory as well as the ability to explain and apply it to questions.

Environmental Systems: It focuses on the ecosystem, resources, and the impact of humans on the environment and on conservation and biodiversity. As this is also classified as a Science subject, the IB tends to focus on three main sets of skills: Defining, Explaining and Applying.

History; Students need to be able to gather and sort historical evidence, as well as evaluate the quality of the evidence acquired due to its subjective nature. Furthermore, students will need to be able to interpret historical data to determine the causes and consequences of historical events.

Business Management: Business and Management can be taken at both higher (HL) and standard (SL) level. At higher level, the students have to cover more content and also have to take an extra module, Business strategy. It is suitable for candidates who want to pursue Business and Management or a related discipline such as Economics in university. Standard level is more suited for students who don’t want to take Business in university.

Economics: The study of Economics requires a keen understanding of the main topics in the syllabus, as well as the ability to explain economic concepts and evaluating economic decisions. The IB focuses on three main skills: Defining, Explaining and Evaluating. Furthermore, students need to be able to draw accurate diagrams and importantly, be able to incorporate them in their discussion.

• Practice with writing economic essays (Paper 1 SL/HL)

• Practice with writing clear explanations (Paper 2 HL)

• Responding to case studies and evaluation (Paper 3 HL or Paper 2 SL)

English: A successful undertaking of English A1 at both the standard and higher level requires very adept skills in analysis of complex texts, formal essay writing and understanding of literary features. In particular, students must have a very specific understanding of the IB criteria and expectations.

Geography: Students need to understand geographical themes from a social, environmental and political perspective. In addition, students must be able to analyze a stimulus, including maps and statistical data.

• Teaching students how to analyze geographical data.

Mathematics: Students need to ensure that they have a firm grasp of the mathematical theory and then subsequently develop their skills by doing challenging questions.

• Ensuring that students understand the theory in detail. This involves covering all the main theorems and topics in the syllabus.

The IB Music program focuses on the student’s ability to compose, improvise, analyze and perform music. To succeed, regular practice and a wider understanding of musical genres and styles are essential.

Second language: IB provides a student with an option of taking up French, Mandarin, Spanish, German etc. It incorporates four main areas of learning: listening, speaking, reading and writing. In addition to this, students need to be very familiar with the way in which the IB assesses these key language skills.

• Helping with the Internal Assessments (IAs). This involves speaking and listening practice, as well as editing drafts of speeches.

• Practice in reading and understanding (Paper 1).

The extended essay forms the core requirement of the IB Diploma programme. Together with the TOK essay and the Creativity, Action and Service program, it forms the essential triad of the diploma programme that is compulsory for each and every student. To get the IBO diploma, passing in he Extended Essay is a pre-requisite.

CAS:

The CAS requirement is a fundamental part of the program and takes seriously the importance of life outside the world of scholarship, providing a refreshing counterbalance to academic studies.

Students are expected to be involved in CAS activities for the equivalent of at least three hours each week during the two years of the program.
