Gulbarga is a land blessed with a glorious history, exalted tradition and rich artistic and cultural heritage. The splendid sculptural and architectural edifices of the eminent royal dynasties of Rashtra Kutas, Chalukyas, Bahamanis, Buddhists, Jains & shaivas have left their indelible stamp of excellence here. The great wealth of Mahakal and Akkujja Sculptors of the Nrupatunga times, the Garudadri style of Art of Surpur, have enriched this land. It is an artistically fertile land, which has produced eminent artists like Shankar Rao Alandkar, Shanthling Patil of Dudni, M.T. Bhopale, Kumar Chandrashekhar and Dr.S.M. Pandit.

The Ideal fine Art Society was inaugurated on 2nd October 1965 by the Hon’ble Minister for Education Sri. S.R. Kanthi. It was conceived and started by Mr. Jagadevappa Khanderao who had profound devotion The opening of such an Art school (Diploma in Drawing & Painting) heralded the dawn of a new awareness and interest in Art and Art education. It was started with the noble aim of creating opportunities, facilities and encouragement to the youth endowed with talents in Art. Prof. Andani V. G. took over the reins of managing the institute in 1972. As a result of his devoted services, in the last three decades, and concern for art and its development. Thousands of youth have blossomed into artists and painters; many have flourished having embraced Art as a profession. Some have gained reputation and reknowned at the state and National levels. From the point view of Art, it was a land which had lapsed into a semdesert, has bloomed into a lush garden. Initially, for many years it was functioning in an old building. But the zeal, enthusiasm and dedicated efforts of Prof. Andani V.G. revitelized it. Then in 1980 new land was leased by Govt. in the heart of the city.

Now, the society has an imposing beautiful Artistic building art complex built with careful planning with an eye to utility, architecture and also aesthetics. It has various departments like the Art Gallery, the Folklore Museums, Painting, Applied Art ,Graphic Studio & Open Theater, Studio, Workshop,& Art Philosophy, Library, & seminar Hall, Computer lab. Excellent library with books on art, culture and literature. The prestigious studio is equipped with the most up to – date art ultra modern facilities for painting, Graphics, Applied Art, and Sculpture, as also a darkroom for photography. The complex consists of The Ideal fine Art Institute and Matoshri Manekbai Kothari College of Visual Art. And Fine Art P.G. Center the estimated cost of the building is Rs. One crore and twenty lakh. The state and Central Governments have partially supported the society with financial aid for building of the Art Complex. The philonttrephere personalities of Gulbarga have also contribution.
