The course will take you through the fascinating world of gemstones as we share with you the 'What', 'Why', 'Where', and 'How' of this simple innocuous looking thing called a stone.
The program will focus on the problems battled in the identification of rough gemstones. Emphasis has been laid on the understanding of basic concepts in a simpler language, keeping in mind the accuracy of the technical matter. It will also help in understanding the basic concepts of rough identification and the factors to be kept in mind while observing a rough gem material. With this program, you will able to identify and evaluate the identity and quality of a stone using a methodical, step-by-step process.

Introduction to Gemmology
Today's customer is informed and educated. This customer has an increasing demand for gemstone studded jewellery and it's important that you are able to satisfy this educated customer. Gemmology is a program that focuses on knowledge of commercially important coloured gemstones

About Shyamala Fernandes
Shyamala Fernandes is one of India's leading Gemmologist and Consultant. She was the in-charge of the Gem Testing Laboratory, Jaipur as Joint Executive Director (Technical & Training). She has also been instrumental in setting up the Gem School at Indian Institute of Jewellery. She began her writing stint in 1983 and has authored and co-authored many articles and papers in different gemmological and trade publications. Currently she is based at Thivim, Goa.

Indian Institute of Jewellery (IIJ) is Asia Pacific's premier autonomous Institute that offers international standard education in Jewellery Manufacturing, Design, CAD, Gemmology, Jewellery Retail and Business. When IIJ first opened its doors in 2004, it had only one program - the Master Creator®- Jewellery Manufacturing Program and since then has introduced several other jewellery education programs in its curriculum.

The proof of this is in the fact that IIJ was chosen as the education partner by the All India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation (GJF) to conduct its training programs by way of a road show called ‘Vinaya’. The summit was conducted in 20 cities in the first two chapters in 2010 and an additional 10 cities in its third chapter in 2011-2012. Vinaya, an educational summit and amongst the country's largest, has been created with a specific purpose - to professionalize and educate the industry in order to maintain world class standards for all related business operations. Vinaya's aim is to promote the Indian gems and jewellery industry by emphasizing the need for education and professionalization.
IIJ has also been recognized as a National Vocational Training Provider (VTP) for the Gems and Jewellery Industry by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Directorate General of Employment & Training (DGET), Regional Directorate of Apprenticeship Training for the Western Region under the Skill Development Scheme (SDIS) based on Modular employable skills by the Government of India.
