Overview, Content & Syllabus

Educational Aims : Knowledge, Understanding and Skills

Management students often want to learn techniques for organising and managing. However, management history is littered with techniques that were once popular and then were discarded because they failed to fulfil what was expected of them. The emphasis in the BBA(Hons) General Management program is, first and foremost, on analysis and understanding of the dynamics of organisations. Good practice, and knowing when a technique will and will not work, follows from a thorough appreciation of the complexity of many problems and issues.

The BBA (Hons) General Management provides an understanding of the way organisations are structured and how they function. There is also a four-year integral work experience variant available for this degree scheme.

Intended Learning Outcomes

An integrative approach
The program emphasises an integrative approach, which recognises the interdependence of people, tasks, technology, organisations, cultures and society.

Inter-disciplinary understanding
The program is an inter-disciplinary endeavour, drawing primarily on the disciplines of psychology, social psychology, sociology, law, philosophy, economics, history, political science, social anthropology and other social sciences. Understanding the inter-relationship between these disciplines and applying their distinctive perspectives is central to the department’s work.

Analysis, not techniques
Management students often want to learn techniques for organising and managing. However, management history is littered with techniques that were once popular and then were discarded because they failed to fulfil what was expected of them. The emphasis in the department is, first and foremost, on analysis and understanding of the dynamics of organisations. Good practice, and knowing when a technique will and will not work, follows from a thorough appreciation of the complexity of many problems and issues

Learning and Teaching Strategies and Methods

The main teaching methods will be through lectures, tutorials, simulations and group work. There also is an expectation that students will demonstrate the ability to undertake independent study.

Assessment Strategies and Methods

Knowledge and understanding is assessed in a number of ways.

  • Group assignments covering applied issues of relevance to business and managers, which enable students to apply theory to practice, involve the collection and analysis of data, and in some cases presentations to class.

  • Simulations and case studies also provide the opportunity to explore and apply concepts in a supportive environment and build understanding of the crucial inter-relationship between subject areas.

  • Examinations and classroom-based tests assess knowledge, understanding and application of theory and key concepts.
