Our Fashion Design programme enables the student to have an in-depth understanding of subject which involves both creativity and use of technology. Our courses are carefully designed to enable students to understand design concepts, various processes in between leading to the final production. The course modules comprise class lectures, demonstrations and practical exercises and projects by students.

 

Year 1

Colour Theory for Fashion Design

This module is designed to provide the participant with the knowledge and skills to enable them to identify and apply the basic theories of colour, line and shape, and develop the principles of balances, composition, movement and rhythm.

History of Costume

This module is designed to provide students insights and understanding of development of costume design throughout the major historical periods. It provides the students with the ability to understand, identify the main characteristics of textiles, accessories and silhouettes for each period.

Textiles

In this module students acquire the fundamental knowledge of textiles and learn how to analyse and identify the origin and nature of textile.

Fashion Merchandising and Marketing

Students are able to acquire necessary knowledge and skills relating to fashion marketing; the module enables them to understand market segmentation, consumer behaviour, the components of the marketing mix, market analysis, marketing strategy development and evaluation.

Fashion Draping 1

To provide students with the ability to understand the vocabulary and fundamental rules pertaining to fashion draping and to provide them with the ability to develop muslins on the mannequin or industrial dress form and analyse them.

Women’s Wear Drafting 1

This module enables students to identify the morphological components of the human form related to the female cut. It provides the students with the ability to draft master slopers (blocks) for women’s wear.

Sewing Applications 1

This module enables students to identify the various industrial sewing techniques for men’s and women’s garments. It provides students with the ability to operate industrial machines better in respect to the safety standards.

Fashion Drawing

This module not only enables students not only to hone their drawing skill relating to fashion design but to also have an in-depth knowledge regarding the complexities of the human anatomy. Students develop a sense of proportion and dimension for fashion based sketches.

Fashion Draping 2

The module provides students with the ability to understand fundamental draping techniques using for bodices, dresses and collars on standard industrial dress form and analyse them.

Women’s Wear Drafting 2

To enable students to understand the configuration of the female silhouette in relation to the cut of more complex ladies garments. The module provides students with the ability to draft master slopers (blocks) and to use them to develop pattern interpretation according to the style lines of a sketch or fashion photograph for women’s wear.

Sewing Applications 2

The purpose of this module is to enable students to identify the various industrial sewing techniques for men’s and women’s garments. It enables students to practice various sewing techniques by making more complex samples and garments.

Garment & Composition

This module enables students to identify and draw different types of garment components and basic styles.

Advanced Drafting & Draping Techniques

This module provides students with the ability to draft and drape more complex master slopers (blocks) and to use them to develop interpretations according to the style lines of fashion sketches or photographs for women’s wear.

Advanced Sewing Techniques

This module enables students to develop an understanding of sewing techniques and details for advanced men’s and women’s tailored garments. Students practice advanced hand-sewing techniques in tailoring for both men’s and women’s wear.

CAD 1 for Fashion Design

In this module students understand the importance and use of computers in managing the fashion industry, through both theory and practice.

Fashion Sketching

This module will enable students to illustrate fabric textures and patterns on the fashion figure in various poses and movements.

 

Year 2

Project Workshop 1

To provide the student with the ability to use the knowledge acquired in previous modules in order to work on various industrial projects that are researched and developed in the module.

Design Research and Development

Provide students with the ability to acquire a solid foundation of quantitative and qualitative research in order to develop design briefs, concepts and mood boards.

Contemporary Fashion, Styles and Trends

This module is designed to introduce the students to the development and changing trends of contemporary fashion beginning with the middle of the 19th century till the present times. This module introduces the student to styles and trends of the 20th century and the events that added to their origins. Also covered are the social, political, cultural events and style arbiters that have shaped and influenced fashion from the haute couture to ready to wear. Furthermore the student will be introduced to the major fashion capitals and analyse the consumer market and buying habits that affect styles and trends.

Men's Wear Workshop

The aim of this module is to enable students to identify the morphological components of the human form related to the masculine cut. Provide the student with the ability to draft master slopers (blocks) for menswear.

Academic Research and Communication Skills

This unit covers key aspects of research and communication studies in academic contexts relevant to students of design and marketing. Students engage in collaborative learning activities throughout the term in order to develop their teamwork skills.

Fashion Communication

This module will enable students in acquiring public relations skills, such as, developing communication plans, preparing press releases and press kits, conducting interviews, producing newsletters, house journals and speeches.

Internship

The Internship module is part of the Advanced Diploma programme. It is compulsory for the students to complete this module in the course of study. The students are required to work with a professional fashion designer or fashion related company in the industry. Students will have to successfully complete a minimum of 24 work days and create an internship report in order to complete the module.

Pattern Aided Design, Grading and Costing

This module will enable students to identify the morphological components of the human form related to the increase or decrease of sizes according to standard measurement charts both manual technique and with the aid of the computer. It will provide students with the ability to arrive at precise costing of garments.

Mini Collection Workshop

The aim of this module is to provide the student with an opportunity to research and design a mini collection using the knowledge acquired in previous modules. At this stage the student will be able to formulate a design brief, initiate research and design concepts.

CAD 2 and Portfolio for Fashion Design

This module will enable students to understand the importance and use of computers in managing the fashion industry, through both theory and practice. It will provide the students with the ability to develop and produce computer design work, digital illustrations and technical drawing using the right computer software.

 

Degree

Design and Subculture

Design and subculture explores the role of design within the on-going interaction between fringe cultural movements and dominant popular culture. This subject explores a range of subcultures and their transition historically into mainstream culture through design.

Design Futures

Design Futures builds on principles established in Sustainable Design, encouraging students to generate critically engaged design practices and methodologies. This subject has a focus on manufacturing and material practices, as well as alternatives to physical design outcomes.

Design Research Interactive Systems

This subject aims to give students an introduction to all interactive systems (Human Factors and Ergonomics) that affect the design process, design research and visual presentations; students will explore and interpret work of International researchers and designers in relation to the fashion discipline.

Major Studio Project

This subject provides an opportunity for students to research, design and put together a significant collection and body of design work.

Men's Wear and Women's Wear Collection

Students will research and develop design briefs relating to Men's Wear and Women's Wear Collection and then further develop these collections in the studio.

Sustainable Design

The aim of this subject is to create awareness among students regarding the importance of designing for sustainability in addition to providing valuable knowledge of current sustainable technologies, materials, design innovation and practitioners.
