Overview, Content & Syllabus

An RJ should sound pleasant when he is heard over the air. An RJ must get the feel of the medium and link his conversation to the music. He must have a general knowledge of the music he plays and not just having a leaning to one genre. Pop, hip-hop, the blues, and rock he should know and enjoy them all. The job is glamorous and fun but a lot of hard work.

An RJ must know a bit of history about the songs and the musicians to make his script interesting too. He should listen to a lot of other radio, like the BBC, CNN, Satellite Radio and pick up tips from there, not necessarily copy anyone's style. Instead, he should evolve a style of his own, with help from these stations.

An RJ talks to a listener on a personal level, not like a room full of people, watching TV. A good RJ is not jarring when he/she speaks, in fact his voice should be as natural as breathing. Voice modulation and the correct inflection of emotions are all important. A good RJ realises it is the music that drives a station and he should not come across stronger than the artiste.

A good RJ can tweak these points around, expand on them and make his show a hit. Preferably he should never write long sentences where he can lose his breath and always concentrate on talking about the music he is playing. Those who are keen on understanding the subtle nuances of the medium. Then, if you are the right one the
