Overview, Content & Syllabus

The academic curriculum of Communication Design at GD Goenka University allows students to easily blend into a global network while acquiring a greater appreciation of local industry trends. The multidisciplinary and broad based structure aims at an all round development. Deriving from the changing paradigms of industry and commerce, its content as well as the methodology has been designed to suit the need of the emerging sectors in design education. The teaching staff shall be a mix of professional and entrepreneurial sectors making a fundamental contribution to the Indian & Global Design culture. A number of entrepreneurs, experts, designers, project professionals, craftsmen and personalities in the fields of services & culture as well as of professional associations shall contribute to the team of teachers and play an essential role in the education program.

The UG program in Communication Design ensures a solid foundation in the discipline as well as competency in methodology and technical-operations. The study of theories and methods is considered as important a part of academic experience as design conceptualization and actualization in workshops. In particular, technological competencies are acquired in areas such as visual, graphical, photographic, typographic and video techniques, treatment of images, visual and audiovisual representations and mechanisms, providing necessary competencies to manage communication design practice in its full spectrum; editorial, media, image, packaging and also interactive and multimedia communication systems supported by digital technologies. The PG programme envisions communication as a successful strategic lever in contemporary society, aiming at creating a professional who is able to move on all fronts of communication design: editorial graphics, television, audiovisual and multimedia publishing; coordinated corporate image; product packaging and communication; type design; web design; audiovisual and interactive product design; service design; and the design of complex communication systems such as social networks and collaborative platforms.

The institute places very high importance on career plans of graduating students and thus has a fully functional training and placement division. This division is in constant networking with the industry, to open new avenues for the students in the professional, business structures of the fashion industry and their supply chains.

Communication designers work towards creating 'effective communication' in everything – from web pages to digital icons, annual reports to corporate logos, from maps and diagrams to album and book covers, from product packaging to digital interfaces and more. A decade back, communication design was about advertising only, but today it can lead to a really wide range of careers in Art direction, Brand management, Content strategy, Copywriting, Creative direction, Information graphics, Instructional design, Marketing communication, Fashion Communication, Signage design, Information architecture, Editing, Typography, Illustration, Human-computer interface, Web design, Animation, Visual identity design and Professional skills as applied in the creative industries. Learning Outcomes :

Subject Specific Knowledge, Understanding and skills

This completion of the degree, students will be able to develop design autonomy, increase theoretical and systemic skills and develop the capacity to coordinate and manage complex communication systems in inter-media communication. The course of studies would specifically seed to prepare professionals with ability to:

  • generate concepts that offer innovative communication responses;

  • design new connections between the various communication formats (crossing format);

  • bring the elements within complex communication systems together in unprecedented ways (divergent thinking);

  • have a systemic vision;

  • work and interact in multidisciplinary and multicultural groups, in the role of designer with the elevated leadership skills necessary to bring a group together around a design vision or scenario

  • undertake effective research to complete above-mentioned objectives

The admission will be based on performance in Design Aptitudes Test (DAT) followed by a personal interview.
