Overview, Content & Syllabus

Travel is the physical transportation of a person from one point to another, is one sector of tourism industry. It is however, a very important sector, for without it the other sectors would most likely not exit .For this reason, it is give its rightful place in the term “Travel and Tourism industry”. Tourism is the activity of people travelling to, visiting and/or staying in places outside their usual environments, for leisure, business or other purposes.

The principle sectors of tourism, each with some examples given, are as follows:

  • Transportation (aircraft, trains, cruise ships)

  • Accommodation (hotels)

  • Attractions (museums, culture sites, theaters)

  • Events and conferences (festivals, trade shows, the Olympic games)

  • Food and Beverage (restaurants)

  • Services (Information centers, tourism association)

  • Travel trade (tour companies, travel agencies).

This is a sophisticated, specialized business that requires a mastery of everything from product knowledge to selling skills to the complexities of electronic distribution systems. when you sell travel and provide service to a travel client you are selling dreams, fantasies and new life experience.

Tourism is the world’s fastest growing industry, experiencing many consecutive years of continuous growth. It is also the fourth largest industry worldwide. The number of international travels (tourism travelling outside their home country) has grown by about 29% between 2001 and 2009.

According to the United Nation World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), international tourist arrivals will reach 1.6 billion by the year 2020. The WTO also forecast that in this same period, Travel and Tourism industry growth will benefit all regions of the world. Many new destinations have developed in untraditional regions of the world, such as in Latin America, Eastern Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

International tourism is the world’s largest export earner and an important factor in the balance of payment of many countries. Tourism is an ‘export’ for any country that hosts or receive foreign visitors. The country “exports” memorable experiences for visitors who spent money in the country’s restaurants, hotels, attractions and ground transportation such as taxi service. International tourist spent USD 852 billion on local air fares, accommodation, meals, shopping, goods and attraction in 2009.

International and domestic tourism combine to generate up to 10% of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP, see Glossary) and often a higher share in small nations and developing countries. Tourism is already the largest foreign exchange earner in 46 of the 49 poorest countries in the world, and it can truly provide benefits to development by creating employment, empowering citizens and raising living standards. The travel and tourism industry is here to stay. No matter what the economic condition are, people will continue to travel.

The Travel and Tourism industry employs over 200 million people worldwide. Many tourism jobs are in small or medium –sized, family-owned enterprises. Research shows that job creation in tourism is growing one-and-a-half times faster than in any other industrial sector. Travel agents or consultants no longer work only in a travel agency. Companies, organizations, associations, educational institutions and societies all need the knowledge and skills of professional travel experts.

The tourist industry provides government with hundreds of million of dollars in tax revenues each year through accommodation and restaurant taxes, airport users fees, sales taxes, park entrance fees and employee income tax. Clearly, this industry offers plenty of opportunities for operating or working in a successful travel consultancy.
