Overview, Content & Syllabus

The NMIMS (Deemed-to-be University) introduced Ph.D. programmes in Biological Sciences and Chemical Sciences in July 2007. The salient feature of these programmes is the emphasis being laid on the overall development of laboratory skills of a research student coupled with an expansion of his/her knowledge base through an interdisciplinary course work comprising lectures and practicals in the first year of the course and subsequently fine tuning these skills in a particular area of specialization. While the research student will have ample opportunity to acquire hands-on training on modern, sophisticated instruments/equipment wherever necessary, he/she will also be able to benefit from the expertise of one or more supervisors, wherever needed.

Duration

The course work in the first year extends over three trimesters. From the second year onwards, each student undertakes research in a specialized area on a topic to be decided by the student in consultation with the Research Supervisor(s) following approval from the Research and Recognition Committee (RRC). The duration of the research project would be minimum 3 years.

INTAKE

A total of 5 seats are available for the Ph.D. program in Biological Sciences

Program Incharge Message

The School of Science (SOS) is a newly founded endeavor of the prestigious SVKM’S NMIMS (Deemed-to-be University), in its efforts to diverge to various disciplines of higher education and learning. The SOS evolved in 2007-2008, with a view to provide undergraduates and post graduates an opportunity to embark on a challenging, yet exciting domain of Pure and Applied Sciences. At the SOS, we offer unique multi- as well as inter-disciplinary programs, viz, Post graduate program in Statistics; Integrated Post-graduate-Doctoral program in Biological Sciences and Chemical Sciences and a Doctoral program in Biological Sciences and Chemical Sciences.

There is a major emphasis on ‘Research’ in all the programs offered at the SOS. We are strongly driven by a highly qualified scientific talent pool. The main focus of our R & D activities has been conducting applied research at the interface of Chemistry and the Biosciences on problems of national and international importance.

Our strategic future plan involves inclusion of innovative areas of inter-disciplinary research, in specific areas through the application of new and cutting-edge technologies.

I welcome you all to an enjoyable and stimulating learning experience at the SOS and look forward to working together to help us achieve our goal, to be recognized as a ‘Centre of Excellence’.

Pedagogy
The course lays emphasis on the overall development of laboratory skills of a research student coupled with an expansion of his/her knowledge base through an interdisciplinary course work. The course work comprises of lectures and practicals in the first year and subsequently fine tuning these skills in a particular area of specialization.

The course is reviewed regularly in consultation with our Board of Studies, which comprises of experts from academia, research institutions and industry from all over India. Thus, the course is tailor made to fulfill the requirements needed to keep pace with the current developments in scientific research.

While the research student will have ample opportunity to acquire hands-on training on modern, sophisticated instruments/equipment wherever necessary, he/she will also be able to benefit from the expertise of one or more supervisors, wherever needed.

In the first year, along with the permanent faculties, the regular lectures are also conducted by visiting faculties who are experts in their respective fields. Apart from the course work, the Faculty also conducts Guest lectures by eminent academicians and scientists, paper presentations (Journal Club), Doctoral Committee Meetings to ensure learner centric environment.

A Research and Recognition Committee (RRC), under the Chairmanship of the Honorable Pro-VC, has recently been established to oversee the quality of research being carried at the School, and to advise the School on measures to improve courses of studies at the post-graduate level and Doctoral level. In addition, methods like quiz, discussions, tutorials, Industry visits etc. are also used by the faculty to benefit the students.

Admission Criteria Process

Candidates will be admitted to the Ph. D. program in the area of interest mentioned in their application form, subject to their clearing of the entrance test and thereafter their performance at an interview to be conducted at the NMIMS Campus, Mumbai.

Selection will be based on educational qualifications, statement of purpose, presentation and interview with the panel of experts.

Evaluation Criteria

During the course work the students will be required to have a minimum attendance of 80% for lectures, practicals and seminars, separately. The students will be evaluated through trimester end exams and through continuous internal assessment.

Internal assessment will be on the basis of fortnightly tests based on Theory. Practical work will be evaluated each week during the course of the regular practicals. Seminars will be evaluated weekly. The grade will be awarded at the end of the year on the basis of Cumulative Grade Point Average.

During the research project, the progress of the work will be evaluated by a Doctoral Committee (DC). The progress of the work will be evaluated on the basis of the presentation made by the student in a DC meeting every six months. The students will be allowed to start writing their thesis only after getting the permission from the DC following their last DC meeting (generally 5th or 6th).

Thesis can be submitted to the University only after two articles have been published/accepted for publication in National/International peer reviewed Journals.

Placements

An “Industry Interface Program” has been initiated at School of Science for the students. The program is aimed at keeping the students abreast of the latest trends in the industry/research organizations through industrial visits and guest lectures and also to explore career opportunities for students in the industry/research organizations. The affairs of Industry Interface Program are being managed by a joint ‘Faculty-Student Cell’.

SVKM's NMiMS - School of Science

School of Science was started in 2007 with a view to provide undergraduate and post graduate students an opportunity to be a part of the unique learning methodology of the university, which lays emphasis on academic excellence combined with industry oriented training. With the boom in information technology and more and more sophistication in instrumentation techniques, there is now a very thin dividing line between the various disciplines of science. Therefore, there is a greater need for flexibility in scientific thought as well as training manpower on an interdisciplinary plane. With this thought in view, the SVKM’s NMIMS introduced, highly innovative and unique interdisciplinary courses at the School of Science from the academic year 2007-2008. The goal of the School of Science is to be a Center of Excellence in the domain of Pure and Applied Science by providing quality education and research.
