What is Intellectual Property Law?

Intellectual property is usually divided into two branches, namely industrial property and copyright.

Copyright relates to artistic creations, such as poems, novels, music, paintings, and cinematographic works.

Industrial property takes a range of forms. These include patents to protect inventions; and industrial designs, which are aesthetic creations determining the appearance of industrial products.

Industrial property also covers trademarks, service marks, layout-designs of integrated circuits, commercial names and designations, as well as geographical indications, and protection against unfair competition.

Importance of Intellectual Property

According to Francis GURRY, Director General, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO):

Intellectual property is the central resource for creating wealth in almost all industries. The focus of business is changing rapidly. Most businesses are deriving their profits from intellectual property.

Today, companies that once dominated industries are finding themselves fighting for survival. Up-start companies are creating new products and services based not on extensive resource holdings or cash hordes but on intellectual property resources.

Management of Intellectual Property resources will differentiate the winners from the losers in decades ahead.

The world economy is recovering from the steepest economic downturn since the Great Depression of the 1930s. In such a situation, companies' strategies and public policies towards innovation and intellectual property (IP) rights are central to promoting sustained economic growth and a confident approach to the future.

Assessments

• The assessments consist of 5 online tests (totaling 250 marks) and 1 Online Final Exam (100 marks).

• You must secure a minimum of 50% in each test to pass the course.

• Re-exam fee is Rs. 300 per test.
