Face masks, commonly known as masks, are those which provide a protective covering for the face. Traditionally, masks were worn to hide the identity and social status of the person. Historical evidence shows that people have been wearing masks for centuries across the world. Over a period of time, new types of masks to suit latest lifestyles are introduced in the market. Masks are worn by people on various occasions, such as Halloween parties, birthday parties, and theme parties.

A Venetian masks is one of the oldest types of masks in the history of mankind. It is also called Venetian carnival mask. It originated during the medieval period in Italy. The word ‘Venetian’ is derived from the word ‘Venice’. These masks are still worn as a tradition during the famous Carnival of Venice, held at Venice in Italy. The mask allows its wearer to act freely without worrying about society’s expectations and social protocol. Earlier, people could easily indulge in illicit and criminal activities by wearing a mask.

These masks were made from paper and embellished with fur, gemstones, gold, silver, and ribbons. Higher the status of a person, more expensive and complex was the mask decoration.

Venetian masks are of many types. A capitano mask, generally worn by men, is a half mask that covers the face till the nose. These masks have a long, pointed nose. A jolly mask can be a half mask or a full mask. It disguises a person as a joker. As the name suggests, a cat mask is a cat face. Normally, it is a bright-colored half mask. A columbian mask is a plain mask meant for the eyes. A bauta mask is a full-face mask generally worn with a hat. A Venetian masquerade mask is a special type of carnival mask that is worn in the masquerade ball event during the carnival. It is mandatory for all the guests attending the ball to wear the mask.
