Even, during the Egyptian period, the cloth that was used to wrap mummies was dyed. It also became popular in the United States during mid-1950. Till date, it is one of the most commonly accepted techniques for dyeing in the Indian textile industry.

Tie and Dye prints are widely used to make home décor items like bedsheets, cushion covers, and wall hangings; articles of clothing like t-shirts, dupattas, sarees, and shawls; accessories such as bags. These products are easily available at any craft bazaar and craft shops in main commercial markets.

In a tie and dye process, the main items needed are – the fabric to be printed, a thread or rubber band for tying the fabric, starch, wooden blocks for marking designs, and a dyeing color. During ancient items, the artisans mainly used leaves, flowers, bark, and the extracts of plants as dyes. Then, they progressed to vegetable dyes and finally to chemical dyes.

Each tie and dye pattern revolves around a theme. As the name suggests, the barah baag pattern depicts a garden of twelve beds of flowers. The chandokhni and shikhara patterns are used for the bridal wear. Another pattern called Ambadal depicts the branches of a mango tree. Chokidal is a pattern of squares with elephants and other animals.
