A detergent is a cleansing agent used to clean a variety of items like clothes, floors, and other items. It is a synthetic product made of a mixture of compounds and not fats. It is used to remove grease and dirt from the items and floors. The cleansing power of a detergent varies according to the purpose for which it is meant. Detergents for cleaning kitchen slabs are stronger than the ones used for mopping the floors. Though a soap is also a synthetic substance, but it does not be belong to the category of detergents.
A detergent acts mainly on the greasy layers that bind the dirt particles. It breaks the greasy layer into small particles that are easily soluble in water. The detergent molecules have two components. a hydrocarbon component that is soluble in oil, and an ionic component that is soluble in water.
The concept of synthetic detergents originated, in its nascent stage, in France in the 19th century. The learning was taken forward by Germany to make detergents during World War I. However, it was only in 1930s that a production process was identified and implemented that could help in its mass production. However, the first synthetic detergents were first developed for commercial use in the 1950s.
Detergents are also available in different fragrances. Some of them have bleaching properties, such as laundry detergents. They can be biodegradable and non-bio degradable. Biodegradable substances are those that can be broken down by microorganisms. Non-biodegradable detergents cause environmental pollution but are generally used in septic tanks and sewage treatment plants. Detergents are available in a wide array of daily consumer products such as toothpastes, antiseptics, utensils soap bar, and floor cleaners. Laundry detergents contain substances called builders that increase the cleansing power.
