Drumset techniques (rudiments, stickings, hand-foot combinations, coordination) as applied to the various styles/periods of jazz, with a primary focus of developing strong time-keeping and 'comping' (accompanying) ability. Study the fundamental ways of accompanying in jazz (playing 'in two,' 'in four,' playing 3/4 'in one' and 'in three,' playing 'straight' versus playing 'loose' or 'open'). Applying similar techniques to improvisation both within comping and as a soloist. The study of jazz song forms and melodies (blues, 16-bar, 24-bar, 32 bar, AABA, rhythm changes), the learning and singing of jazz "heads" (melodies) and orchestrating them on the drum set as a basis for developing strong musical sense and improvisation skills. Learn to groove (swing). Playing with the bassist, learning what the bassist does, outlining form and building interest and direction within an ensemble. Study the use of dynamics and exchanging rhythmic and melodic ideas with the other players and similar musical elements both during comping and soloing. Upon completion of the course the student should be able to support the ensemble with a strong groove and knowledge of musical form, enhance the ensemble and soloist, and demonstrate basic solo vocabulary in each song form presented.

The focus here will be on providing a condensed, yet thorough, practical approach to the drums – through simple and fundamental techniques and concepts that can be easily learned and quickly applied.

Each module will focus on the required instrumental techniques for performing in a given style, with the emphasis on learning these techniques through studying actual music and musical application, rather than focusing on a wealth of technical exercises.

In addition to these technical fundamentals, each course will begin with a study of the development and key artists and repertoire of a given style. True School believes that it is through the study and emulation of key artists and ensembles that a student first begins to grasp a style of music.

The course will then move into the specific musical elements of each style through the study of representative repertoire, harmony, melody, rhythms, sound, groove, improvisation and the like.
