Overview, Content & Syllabus

What is MCA?
Master of Computer Applications (MCA)is a three-year (six semesters) professional Master's Degree in computer science awarded in India. The course was designed to meet the growing demand for qualified professionals in the field of Information Technology. It is a postgraduate course that can be taken up after obtaining a Bachelor's Degree. The MCA programme is inclined more toward Application Development and thus has more emphasis on latest programming language and tools to develop better and faster applications. Generally, the written test is on the pattern of Objective Type questions.

Since, most of the colleges in India shortlist the candidates for admission through only the written test, for some, for instance -- Delhi University, the shortlisted aspirants (on the basis of a written test) will have to appear in an interview before they are finally selected.

The tests are generally of 2-3 hours in duration. Marking scheme (negative marking and its amount) is subjective to the individual test pattern. The language in most tests is only English. The areas that are covered in the written test mainly include Mathematics (predominantly), Reasoning & Analytical decision-making, general awareness and basic knowledge of computers.

Syllabus for MCA entrance Exam:
Most of the universities and colleges in India provide admission to the students on the basis of the marks secured by them in the MCA entrance test, apart from the marks secured by them in their degree course. Most of these universities conduct their own entrance test or some even select the students on the basis of the marks secured by them in the common entrance test (AIMCET) conducted by the IIT Roorkee.

Most of the MCA entrance test questions are objective type questions and some even include fill in the blanks, true or false, etc… Normally, MCA entrance exams comprise questions from statistics, basics of computers, and mathematics. Some universities even test the reasoning ability, general knowledge, quantitative and verbal ability of the students.

Under the subject mathematics, most of the universities cover the topics like algebra, trigonometry, geometry, differential equations, mechanics, linear programming, numeric analysis, probability and statistics. Under the category of reasoning ability test, some of the areas covered are dissimilar test, alphabet test, analogy test, statement and its conclusion, question based on passage (i.e.) comprehension and syllogism are covered.

Books for preparing to MCA entrance exam:
Many private institutes conduct coaching classes for helping the students to get through the entrance examination. Apart from this, many books are being written by experts for helping the students. These books contain the previous year question papers with answer keys of different universities and some of these books also contain practice test papers, with the help of which the students can prepare and evaluate themselves before attending the entrance test. Some of the most popular MCA entrance examination books include the MCA entrance examination book written by J.V. Subramanyam, TANCET MCA-Anna University written by V.V.K. Subburaj, IGNOU openment Entrance Exam for M.B.A and M.C.A written by V.V.K. Subburaj, etc.
