Learn Filmmaking by making four films
At the Institute of Moving Images, we believe the best way to learn filmmaking is by actually making films. And it starts from first week itself.

IMI has designed & developed an intensive program to develop an understanding of the grammar of visual storytelling and collaborative nature of filmmaking in short span of time.

The program provides great overview for all those like you who want to know more about working behind the camera. Already 1450 bright and young film enthusiasts, including management professionals, doctors, space scientists, IT engineers, architects, advertising executives, photo-journalist, business analysts, fighter pilots, army officers, college lecturers, actors, animators and undergraduates have successfully completed this course.

IMI short-term Film Foundation program imparts theoretical as well as practical knowledge of the craft of filmmaking and familiarizes you with all the aesthetic aspects to appreciate cinema as an art form. It essentially enables you with expertise to make own low cost short films.

More specifically, here you will be taken through the entire process of filmmaking. You will acquire and apply knowledge in script writing, production designing, shot division, directing & post production while making series of four exercise films independently and also assisting others in their productions. Your work will be assessed critically in the class by our faculty who are industry professionals.

The students apply the experience gained through constructive discussion with them in their next exercise and the learning process continues.

The combination of non-stop collaborative work, diverse experiences and shared passion for cinema, makes IMI Filmmaking Foundation workshop intensely enriching, exciting and rewarding creative experience, you can ever have.

Upon successful completion of the workshop, students make their final film of 8-10 minutes duration on HDV camera and post production on Avid Xpress.

Students receive a certificate and DVD show reel of all their films at the Institute.

Admission Criteria

  • There is no admission requirement as the course is designed to offer foundation skills

  • Applications are selected on "first cum first served" basis

  • Admission on the basis of the reasons you give why you wish to study film, unless there is substantial incompatibility between applicant's expectations and the workshop. For more detail, go to Admission requirements page

  • The need to follow and understand the intensive course of lectures make it imperative that all students have a satisfactory knowledge of English language

  • Graduation is preferred. Students applying to IMI Filmmaking Foundation program come from a wide-spectrum of educational background including management professionals, doctors, IT engineer, architect, painter, animator and under-graduates in Humanity, Science & commerce. However, minimum eligibility is a 10 / HSC / A-Level or equivalent level of education

Understanding of Camera as a tool

The curriculum for Foundation workshop is designed to give you a great view of what goes behind the camera. To ensure you are truly enabled with expertise to appreciate cinema as an art form and can make your own low cost short films. The curriculum gives complete theoretical insights as well as hands-on practical experiences to the students.

During the workshop, each student makes a series of exercise films. This takes you through the entire process of filmmaking. Your work is constantly assessed and criticized by our faculty who are industry professionals. The student applies the experience gained through this process to the next exercise, and the learning process continues.

During short tenure of the course - you will write, shoot, direct & edit 4 short films independently and also assist others in their productions.

Here is an in-depth breakdown of course module to give you a sense of what a typical day in the life of our Foundation workshop student is like.

Course dates

One & half month, weekend batches of IMI Filmmaking Foundation workshop are conducted every month at various locations throughout India in collaboration with premier colleges & universities which are ideally suited for working professionals as well as students who have other time commitments; whereas 3 weeks full-time regular batches are perfect for people who can come to IMI campus and stay in Pune for three weeks.

Course Duration:
One & half Month Weekend Batches
(Saturday & Sunday/ 4pm to 9pm/ 12 Sessions) At various Colleges & Universities throughout India

Three Weeks full-time regular Batches
(Monday to Thursday/ 10AM to 3PM/ 12 Sessions) Only at IMI Campus in Pune

 

Welcome to the Admission Process at IMI.

Institute of Moving Images is open to applicants of all nationalities and background with minimum age of 18 years who are seriously interested in the field of professional filmmaking.

The average age of students is in their early twenties, but the range is wide and we welcome applications from older students also.

To be eligible for the admission in any course at IMI, graduation is preferred but not mandatory.

IMI admission policy recognizes that there will be some outstanding applicants with backgrounds in other disciplines and work experience including those without standard graduation degree. What we are essentially looking for is raw talent and new voices with something to say.

The general category of applicants apply for admission in IMI are those who have not yet had any production experience but who have a history of creative interest in film, theater, writing, painting or in still photography.

Admission is purely on merit.

Applicants merit & creative potential are evaluated on the basis of their response to aptitude test questions listed on the admission form and their performance at interview.

The entire admission process at IMI is free of stress and straightforward as possible.

Located inside a sedate green, sprawling campus of a reputed university in Pune, IMI provides an interesting backdrop for concentrated study of filmmaking and to shoot student exercise films.

We select only those students who are the raw talent and genuine potential. We have very high expectation of our students and demand 100% commitment from each of them.

But the fact remains that no one is ever hired in the film industry on the basis of mere paper qualification.
