Mentor – Mentee Relationship
A Mentor – Mentee relationship is one of the most important relationships in the field of management, wherein the mentor is like a guide/ guardian, friend and consultant.
Students enroll in an MBA programme with a million dreams and a thousand aspirations. At this stage, they tend to deviate from their vision. They need someone who can illuminate their career paths. The guide nudges them to focus and achieve what they desire, and also provides a helpful listening ear.
At IIFP, we focus on the needs of students and provide solutions to their problems in the form of an established mentor - mentee relationship.
We follow an association of 1:8, meaning a single mentor is responsible for 8 students. First year students are paired with faculty members, with the objective being to assist them with any issues or problems that they may face, insofar as to ensure that they continue their learning without any disturbances.
The responsibilities of a Mentor are:
-
To keep students informed of their academic performance and encourage their participation in extracurricular activities.
-
Help students to chart out a suitable career path.
-
Provide students tips in grooming & etiquette
The following table will help us understand the mentor-mentee relationship better:
|
Relation Parameter |
Mentee |
Mentor |
|---|---|---|
|
Clear Communication |
Specifies what he/ she desires from the program |
Shows the way forward to achieve one’s goals |
|
Support Offerings |

Encourages them always and helps create an action plan |
|
Point of Contact |
Be polite, ask questions and keep up with your emails |

|
Being honest |
If you don’t understand something, do not hesitate to ask for a clarification |
Ensure a truthful and proper response |
|
Actively participate |
If mentor is local, try to gain practical experience |
Utilise mentee as a resource & engage them |
|
Be positive |
Never take feedback as criticism |
Recognize and appreciate the hard work of the mentee |
|
Reliable and consistent |
Ask questions frequently and always be in touch with your mentor |
Be spontaneous in your replies |
|
Innovative and creative |
Offer ideas for activities |
Formulate and incorporate their ideas to encourage participation |
|
Define expectations |
Review your performance from time to time |
Help set up a system to measure and improve performance |
The theory of a friend, philosopher, and guide is used at IIFP to setup a fabulous relationship between a mentor and a mentee. If there is really someone whom you can bank upon during the course of your enrollment, that person is ‘your mentor’.
