Overview, Content & Syllabus

There is much more to shooting a movie or television programme than to pointing a camera on the illuminated subject and operating it. The cameraperson is required to create images for the presentation on the screen that delight the eye. He has, therefore, to understand and employ the psychology of human perception to do his work. In otherwords, the cameraperson has to understand how the human mind respondsto the visual information presented before the eye and to this end hehas to adopt the right way to record moving images for presentation on the large screen of a cinema theater or the small screen of a TV set.He has also to keep in mind what viewers have been conditioned toaccept through years of movie going and television watching.

Rules and methods of recording the image have to be followed and adopted by the cameraperson. There are a number of skills needed to operate a movieor television camera which have to be developed by the cameraperson.

Lighting is indeed at the heart of filmmaking and television production. A thorough knowledge of the tools and techniques involved in lighting is necessary to produce good quality and pleasing pictures. Lighting create the environment for the screen presentation. Apart from the fundamental role of illuminating the subject, light is one of the most important elements in the visual design of film and television images. The basic principles of film and television lighting are largely the same no matter where they are practiced and at what level!

Film and television are mediums of the camera because all techniques of screen-presentation are related to it. Certain skills and technical knowledge are needed to operate a film or television camera and tolight the subject to do a wide variety or work in film and television.

This intensive one year course which a judicious mix of theory and practice, will provide the student with an insight into ways in which images should be recorded for the screen resentation.

Graduates of a recognized university who may be interested in visual literacy together with developing skills in camera operations and the art of lighting in depth, are welcome to enroll in this course.

About Course Provider

AAFT (Asian Academy of Film & Television)

We have always believed that a film school should take a holistic and realistic approach in its teaching. By holistic we mean that film school training should not be limited to only classrooms and lectures on theories and techniques. Therefore, at AAFT we have adopted a comprehensive training method with equal importance on the practical training of film making and acting.

Believing that training and skill building are quite essential in the field of visual media, Asian Academy of Film & TV, has been imparting education and training in the art & craft of film making in television presentation since 1993.

The academy was planned as an alternative to formal film schools and has since come a long way making a unique place for itself amongst the best global centers of education of its kind. Growing to be certified as the first ISO 9001:2000 film school in this part of the world in less than a decade since its inception, the Academy was also approved as an international level training center by the 125 year old City & Guilds of the United Kingdom in the year 2002.

Students with varied background, experience and culture are selected for admission to the academy for their talent and enthusiasm. Although students spend most of their time on the projects, the education and training imparted at AAFT is more than just a craft model.

Education and training for various courses are provided by expert media practitioners supplemented by visiting guest lecturers who are leading exponents of their specialized skills in the practical craft of film & television production.

The Academy has also done pioneering work of generating training a world class material in the form of books and video recordings on the various techniques of film and television production both for the benefit of its students and the practicing film and television professionals. The Documentation Center of the academy has produced a number of books on the art & screen presentation.

The academy is affiliated to the International Film & Television Research Center which aims at raising professional standards of films and television presentations. Film and Television personalities from all over the world are often the guest of the Research Center. AAFT is also affiliated to International Film & Television club.

Festivals of Israel, Japanese, Croatian, Norwegian and Russian films have already been organized by the Club in the past. Students of the academy greatly benefit from the activities of both these organizations.
