Come July, Theatre Professionals will open The Drama School, Mumbai. A school in the heart of South Mumbai, whose aim is to forge a new generation of theatre makers. A school structured on the best practices that exist in drama schools across the world.

The first offering of the school, is the One year certificate course in Acting and Theatre-Making which covers Training, Internships, and a Touring Production.

We seek to create the actor-creator-entrepreneur, an individual who:

•     Understands the fundamental tools of dramatic performance.

•     Understands the skills of storytelling and has the means to creating work for themselves.

•     Has a 360 degree awareness of all the ancillary processes of putting up a theatre production.

•     Learns how to apply his or her skills in other fields, so that s/he has a means to sustain himself or herself.

Our students will be individuals who cultivate integrity, see learning as a lifelong process, and believe in rigour, focus and collaboration as the core pillars upon which to build their craft.

Our curriculum has emerged out of multiple conversations and inputs from our collective of drama-pedagogues, who have taught our workshops across the years. It is a combination of some of the most effective concepts experienced by each of them during their own training, and of methods and practices that they have worked with during their teaching.

It comes at a time where formal contemporary training in the craft of theatre in India is sorely lacking, and opportunities to go abroad to other centres of dramatic excellence is out of reach for many

Fortunately, we are now at a time where a critical mass of highly accomplished, highly trained drama instructors (all of whom actively and regularly perform as well) are located in Mumbai, and jointly are ready and excited to come together to make this programme a reality. Never has planning for such a grand venture, been as joyous as this.

The School will operate out of the Mumbai Marathi Sahitya Sangh, in Girgaum, returning to the foundry of Marathi theatre practice in Mumbai in the 1950s.

The Drama School Mumbai opens on the 1st of July 2013.
