Q. What is Bharatanatyam?

A. Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest classical dance forms of India and is one of the most popular Indian classical dance form that is all over the world. It is a dance of mind and soul. It’s antiquity lies about 3000 years ago with a mythological as well as a historical origin. Meaning of Bharatanatyam is the dance (natyam), that beautifully blends the three elements – ‘Bha’ – Bhava (from expressions), ‘Ra’ – Raga (from musical melody)and ‘Ta’ – Tala (from rhythm).
The name ‘Bharata’ is after Bharata Muni, the great author of the “Natya Shastra” which is the oldest surviving text on stagecraft in the world.

Q. What is the best age to start learning the dance?

A. 6.5 onwards is a good age to start.

Q. Where are the classes offered? What are the timings?

A. The classes are conducted in the Club House at Prestige Lake Vista [opposite Laughing waters in Ramagondanahalli] in the Whitefield area of Bangalore.
There are classes on weekday evenings and weekend mornings and class timings for each student is decided based on age, level and other factors.

Q. What is the duration of each class?

A. 1 hour

Q. How many classes does one attend per week?

A. student normally attends 2 classes [2 hours] per week.

Q. What is the meaning of Arangetram?

A. Arangetram is the dancer’s first complete solo performance. It is similar to a graduation and should be performed after learning a complete margam or repertoire.
