What is MBBS?

MBBS stands for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. The naming suggests that they are two separate degrees; however, in practice, they are usually treated as one and awarded together. Professionals holding MBBS degrees are referred to by the courtesy title of "Doctor" and use the prefix "Dr". The degrees are the British equivalent of the American M.D. Medicinae Baccalaureus, Baccalaureus Chirurgiae (abbreviated in various ways, viz. MBBS or MBChB, MB BS, MB BChir, BM BCh, MB BCh, MB ChB, BM BS, BM, BMed etc.), are the two first professional degrees awarded upon graduation from medical school in medicine and surgery by universities in United Kingdom and and other places following the British tradition, such as Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India.

The basic or degree level qualification for a medical profession is MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine And Bachelor of Surgery) which is of 5 1/2 years duration (including 1 year internship). Selection for MBBS is through an All India Entrance Examination. The qualification required for entrance is 10+2 or equivalent with Science subjects. In the case of private medical colleges entrance examinations are conducted by the institutes individually. Every student shall undergo a period of over 4 1/2 academic years divided into 9 semesters, followed by one year compulsory rotating internship. Medical education in India is regulated by Medical Council of India.

In India Medical education is offered at four levels:

  1. First degree - Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)

  2. Postgraduate diplomas in specific areas such as Child Health (DCH), Laryngology and Otology (DLO), Diploma in Gynecology and Obstetrics (DGO) and postgraduate degree in broad specialities – Doctor of Medicine (MD), Master of Surgery (MS)

  3. Postgraduate degree (Super Specialities) - Doctor of Medicine (DM), and Master of Chirurgiae (MCh) also known as post-doctoral degrees

  4. Research degree M.Phil and PhD.

What is BDS?

BDS stands for Bachelor of Dental Surgery. In India BDS degree is awarded at the successful completion of four years of study and one year of internship to the students as per the old regulations of Dental council of India. According to new regulations, the BDS course comprises of five years with no internship period. Post graduate courses (Master of Dental Surgery. MDS) are also available in different specialties. It requires 3 years of study after BDS.

Dentistry is the branch of medicine that is involved in the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders and conditions of the oral cavity, the maxillofacial area and the adjacent and associated structures, and their impact on the human body. While pursuing the course, one learns about different aspects of Dental Science, which includes various forms of treatment including surgical procedures. Dental materials, Dental anatomy & Oral histology, Oral Pathology, Community Dentistry, Pedodontics, Oral Medicine & Radiology are some of the topics that are generally taught.

After pursuing BDS course, one can work as dentist in government or private hospitals or open up his/her own clinic, to serve the society.

 

Fields of Specializations

The increasing complicated lifestyles giving birth to a variety of ailments have made it impossible for General Physicians with an MBBS degree to handle all ailments. It is here that specialization in a particular branch of medicine becomes a necessity. The major Specializations include General Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat), Psychiatry, Anesthesiology etc. There is also Super Specializations which require a further 3-5 years of study in areas such as Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Cardio-thoracic surgery, Conito-urinary surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology and Clinical Hematology.

Some of the common areas of specialization in Medicine and Surgery are:

General Practitioner or Physician

He diagnosis and treats the every day and sundry ailments of the human body. MBBS holders practice as physicians.

General Surgeon

Is one who specializes in surgery for all organs of the body. He can further specialise in specific areas. Duties involve examining the patient to determine the extent and nature of injury, treatment through operation and giving post operative care. Surgery is of various types Orthopaedic, Plastic, Neuro etc.

Anesthetist or Anesthesiologists

Administers anesthetics to a patient undergoing surgical operation according to the nature of operation. It is he who makes the surgical procedure as painless as possible. His duties involve examining the patient to determine his capacity to withstand shock of operation and anesthesia. He/she has huge responsibility and has to be present throughout the operation.

Psychiatrist

Diagnoses and treats mental disorders. Psychiatry has two major branches: The first is psychotherapy, the application of psychological techniques to the treatment of mental illnesses. This branch uses non-drug therapies and will not use physical techniques such as drugs or surgery. The second branch is psychiatry, where medical therapies are used. After diagnosing physical and behavioural symptoms, drugs and other means may be used for treatment.

Neurologist

Diagnosis and treats diseases related to brain and nervous system. They also specialise in Neuro-surgery.

Pediatrician

Treats newborn babies and children.

Ophthalmologist or Eye Specialist

Treats diseases and disorders of eyes.

Pathologist

Investigate the cause of various diseases and the possibilities for their prevention. His duties involve conducting chemical, microscopic and bacteriological test in labs and examining blood, tissues, urine etc. to find out the cause for disease.

Cardiologist

Also called as heart specialist. Treats diseases related to heart and circulatory system.

Gynecologist-Obstetrician

Diagnosis and treats diseases and disorders of human female reproduction system. They care for pregnant women from conception through delivery.

Dermatologist

One who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of skin problems.

Orthopedist

Deals with diseases connected to skeletal system. Orthopedics is that branch of medicine that deals with the correction of deformities and prevention of disorders in joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, all bones and bony tissue.

Gastroenterologist

Treats diseases related to liver, pancreas, stomach, intestine, bowels and gall bladder.

Radiologist

Diagnosis diseases and disorders by studying X-ray pictures of affected parts and gives treatment such as therapeutic radiation to affected parts of the body.

ENT specialist

Treats disorders of ear, nose and throat

Tuberculosis Specialist

Treats ailments due to infection by tubercular disease.

Venereologist

Treats venereal or sexual diseases.

Bacteriologist

Also called Microbiologist. Conducts research and laboratory experiments on occurrence, growth, development, control and utilization of bacteria and other micro-organisms.

Physiologist

Studies normal functioning of different organs and tissues of human body and investigates effects of physical environments such as variations in altitude, speed, temperature etc on its vital functions.

Nutritionist

Gives instructions regarding food values and utilization of foods in human body to keep it healthy and control diseases. He prescribes diet for various diseases.

Chiropodist

Also called pedicurist, treats foot diseases and abnormalities. He treats corns, blisters etc using surgical instruments.

What is NEET?

1. What is NEET-UG?
NEET stands for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test.
The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (UG) is a new qualifying cum entrance examination notified under the 'Regulations on Graduate Medical Education 1997 and BDS Course Regulations, 2007' by the Medical Council of India as published in the Gazette of India Extraordinary dated 21st December, 2010 and 15st February, 2012 and the Dental Council of India as published in the Gazette of India Extraordinary dated 31st May, 2012.
NEET has been introduced by Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) Govt, of India and Medical Council of India (MCI). NEET has been introduced for:

  1. Undergraduate (NEET-UG) Medical Course like MBBS, BDS etc.

  2. Post Graduate (NEET-PG) Medical Courses like M.S, M.D etc.


2. Why NEET?

  1. To create an umbrella or single entrance exam for all medical aspirants in India.

  2. Till now admission to the se seats was done through national state level entrance exams. There were over 25 such different Medical Entrance Examinations in India for admission into various Govt. & Pvt. Medical Colleges.

  3. On an average a student appeared in 7-9 entrance exams, thereby causing unnecessary stress on them as well as on parents.

  4. Moreover, giving so many exams creates lot of financial burden for the parents since each examinations involves expenses like Application Fee & commuting to appear for the entrance test in various cities / at various test centers. So NEET will avoid unnecessary wastage of time, effort & money.

  5. Moreover, multiple exams also pose the challenge of preparing for different syllabi and patterns for students. This further increases the stress among students.

  6. NEET will replace AIPMT, AFMC and other state-level CET such as Delhi-PMT, MHCET, R-PMT, WBJEE, EAMCET etc. (AIIMS does not come under NEET)


3. What is the difference between AIPMT and NEET examination?
NEET is a single eligibility cum entrance examination namely 'National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for admission to MBBS/BDS courses' in each academic year. AIPMT was conducted by CBSE for selection of candidates for admission to 15% seats under All India Quota. With the introduction of NEET, the said examination will replace AIPMT and other similar Under Graduate level Medical Entrance Examinations.

4. Who will be conducting NEET (UG)?
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will be conducting the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test for admission to MBBS/BDS Courses in the session 2013-14. Other important organizations involved are:

5. How many colleges are participating in NEET-UG and how many seats are available?
A total of ~355 MBBS & ~300 Dental colleges have been listed by MCI, which will fall under the aegis of NEET 2013. These colleges shall offer a total of ~43,700 MBBS seats & ~24,800 Dental seats across India.

6. Whether the exam. will be offline or online?
NEET (UG)-2013 will be an offline pen and paper test.

7. What is the examination date for NEET 2013?
The date of examination is 5th May, 2013 (Sunday).

8. Will there be only single stage exam?
NEET will be a single stage exam.

9. What will be the syllabus of NEET (UG)?
The Question Papers for NEET shall be based on a common syllabus notified by the Medical council of India.

10. What will be the pattern of NEET? The Entrance Examination consists of one paper containing 180 objective type questions (four options with single correct answer) from the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany & Zoology) to be answered on the specially designed machine-gradable sheet using Blue/Black Ball Point Pen only. Each correct answer will get 04 marks and for each incorrect response, 01 mark will be deducted from the total score. Thus, paper will be of total 180x4 = 720 marks.

11. What are the duration/timings of NEET?
The NEET will be of three hours from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m.

13. How to fill up ‘online’ application form for NEET? Are there any guidelines for the students before filling the application form?
Application form for NEET-UG can be submitted only online.

14. How to remit fee for NEET-UG?
The examination fee for NEET-UG can be remitted in the following manner:
a. Online payment through Debit/Credit Card
b. Payment against Challan at the branches of Canara Bank/Syndicate
c. Bank/e-Post Office

15. How to find out the nearby CANARA BANK/SYNDICATE BANK/E-POST OFFICE for fee remittance?
The CBSE website will show the nearby E-POST OFFICE/CANARA BANK/SYNDICATE BANK branches to the candidates. The online application also has a provision to show nearby branches of BANKS and E-POST OFFICE if the candidate chooses to make payment by challan.

16. If a candidate for any reason not appearing or appeared in the exam, is there any fee refund provision?
No, after submission of the application form it cannot be withdrawn. Claims for refund of application fee will not be entertained.

17. What is the fee amount for NEET-UG, 2013?
Fee for candidates belonging to General category is Rs. 1000/- and for SC/ST/PH is Rs. 550/-

18. What is the eligibility for NEET-UG, All India Quota Seats and State Quota Seats?

  1. Indian Nationals and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) are Eligible for appearing in the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG)

  2. Eligibility for All India Quota Seats

    1. He/She has completed age of 17 years at the time of admission or will complete the age on or before 31st December of the year of his/her admission to the 1st year MBBS/BDS Course and is an INDIAN NATIONAL.

    2. The upper age limit for candidates seeking admission under 15% All India Quota Seats is 25 years as on 31st December of the year of the entrance examination. Further provided that this upper age limit shall be relaxed by a period of 5 (five) years for the candidates of Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes/Other Backward Classes. Candidate must born on or between (a) 01.01.84 to 01.01.97 (SC/ST/OBC Category) (b) 01.01.89 to 01.01.97 (Other Category)

  3. Eligibility for State Quota Seats

    1. He/She has completed age of 17 years at the time of admission or will complete the age on or before 31st December of the year of his/her admission to the 1st year MBBS/BDS Course and is an INDIAN NATIONAL.

    2. Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) are eligible for admission in Medical/Dental Colleges subject to rules and regulations framed by the respective State Governments and the Government of India.


19. What is the minimum and maximum age for appearing in NEET exam 2013?

  1. The minimum age of candidate is 17 years completed at the time of admission or will complete the age on or before 31st December of the year of his/her admission to the 1st year MBBS/BDS Course.

  2. The upper age limit for a candidate seeking admission under 15% All India Quota seats in Government Medical Colleges through National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) is 25 years as on 31st December of the year of the entrance examination. Further provided that this upper age limit shall be relaxed by a period of 5 (five) years for the candidates of Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes/Other Backward Classes.

  3. There is no upper age limit for candidates appearing in the NEET for State Quota seats. However, admission shall be subject to the prevailing norms in each State/UT.


20. What are the enclosures that should be attached with the confirmation page?
After submission of online application form, candidate is required to send duly completed and attested confirmation page of online application form and proof of fee paid to the CBSE.

21. If mistakenly during filling of the form, wrong particulars are filled in the online form, how it will be corrected?
There will be an option for ONE TIME online correction of personal particulars of candidates. However, candidate will not be allowed to correct CHOICE OF EXAM CENTRE, LANGUAGE OF QUESTION PAPER AND CHOICE OF SEATS under any circumstances.

22. If a candidate passed class XII with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English subjects from NIOS, whether he/she is eligible to appear for NEET.

  1. Candidate must have passed any of the qualifying examinations or appearing in the qualifying examination in 2013.

  2. Candidate must have passed in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Bio-technology and English individually and must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks taken together in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Bio-technology at the qualifying examination.

  3. In respect of the candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes or Other Backward Classes, the marks obtained in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Bio-technology taken together in qualifying examination shall be 40% marks instead of 50% marks for General Candidates. Further, for persons with locomotory disability of lower limbs, minimum of 45% marks for Gen-PH and 40% marks for SC-PH/ST-PH/OBC-PH are required.


23. If a student studied up to class 11th from CBSE Board from KSA/Abroad and class XII from CBSE School in India, will he/she be treated as NRI student or can she be eligible for state quota also through NEET.
Only Indian Nationals are Eligible for 15% All India Quota Seats. Eligibility for State Quota Seats is as per prevailing rules in the State/UT concerned. No State eligibility criteria will be applicable to the students who take admission under 15% All India Quota Scheme.

24. Is it compulsory to take Maths if I want to appear in NEET?
It is not necessary to take Maths to appear in NEET.

25. I have passed 12 class in the subjects of English, Hindi, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physical education and appeared/appearing for Biology subject from any other Board(s)/NIOS examination, will I eligible for NEET.
No, any examination equivalent to class XII passed from a recognized Board/University comprising of Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Bio-technology including practical test in these subjects and English is only eligible.

26. Whether score of class 12th will be given weightage to appear in NEET?
No, the minimum Eligibility criteria for NEET-UG is to pass the qualifying examinations with the minimum prescribed marks for each category of Students.

27. From which date the NEET 2013 forms will be available.
The Online Application for NEET-UG 2013 will be available on website cbseneet.nic.in from 1st December 2012.

28. Is the availability of forms will be online or it can be purchased from any bank or institution.
A candidate can only apply on-line by logging on to cbseneet.nic.in.

29. For how many attempts / numbers a student can appear for NEET?
There is no limit for number of attempts. However Eligibility for admission for MBBS/BDS courses will be subject to Medical Institutions/University.

30. How to send confirmation Page of Application Form of NEET-UG 2013.
The Confirmation Page along with the proof of original fee receipt issued by the Bank/Post Office may be sent by Speed Post or registered Post only.

31. Can one send confirmation page of online application through courier?
No.

32. If a candidate born in USA and studied in India and holding OCI Card wants to apply for NEET 2013, is he/she is eligible for NEET 2013?
Yes. Indian Nationals and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) are Eligible for appearing in the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG).

33. What is the scheduled date for web hosting of Admit Cards for NEET exam 2013?
The schedule of hosting of Admit Cards is from 1st April, 2013 and 10th April, 2013.

34. When will be the result of NEET exam 2013 declared?
The tentative schedule of declaration of result of NEET – UG, 2013 is end of 1st week of June, 2013.

35. Whether AIPMT would take place in 2013?
No.

37. What is All-India quota and State quota seats?
15% seats in Government Medical Colleges filled through the Counselling conducted by DGHS are All India quota seats. Seats filled through the counselling conducted by the State Counselling Authorities and Management Quota seats of Private Medical Colleges are under State Quota seats.

38. Will admission to AIIMS and JIPMER be through NEET from 2013 onwards?
No. Admission to AIIMS and JIPMER will be through the selection processes conducted by the Institutions concerned.

39. Will there be negative marking in NEET?
Yes. Each correct answer will get 04 marks and for each incorrect response, 01 mark will be deducted from the total score.

40. What about the private universities? Are they accepting NEET score?
Except AIIMS and JIPMER admission to all other Medical and Dental Colleges is expected to be based on merit positions in the NEET.

41. Up to which date and how long a result of the student is valid for?
The result of successful candidates of NEET (UG) 2013 is valid for the academic session 2013-14 only.

42. Is there any helpline for NEET 2013 examination for the aspirants?

43. How does one know the status of acceptance of application form by the CBSE?
Information regarding receipt of duly attested and completed confirmation page of online Application Forms and proof of remittance of fee will be hosted from time to time on website www.cbseneet.nic.in. Candidates can check the status online.

44. Can anyone cancel the application submitted for NEET?
Application forms once submitted cannot be cancelled.

45. What do the candidates need to bring to the exam center?

  1. The candidate is required to bring his/her admit card of NEET (UG).

  2. Candidates are advised to bring with them a card board or a clip board so that they have no difficulty in writing responses in the Answer Sheet even if the tables provided in the Examination Hall do not have smooth surface.

  3. They will also bring their own Blue/Black Ball Point Pens of good quality. These will not be supplied by the Board.

  4. One Post Card size (3.5" x 5") photograph.


46. Will any candidate be able to leave early if he finishes the test before the allocated test time?
No, candidate will leave the examination hall/room before the test concludes.

47. How will one know, if he has been successful in the NEET-UG?
The result of NEET-UG will be uploaded on the CBSE website. The tentative schedule of declaration of result of NEET-UG, 2013 is end of 1st week of June, 2013.

48. How long is the result of a student valid?
The result of successful candidates of NEET (UG) 2013 is valid for the academic session 2013-14 only.

49. What is the evaluation procedure of the test?

  1. Marks scored in Biology section of paper (Higher marks will be placed higher in the rank)

  2. Marks scored in Chemistry section of paper (Higher marks will be placed higher in the rank)

  3. Marks scored in Physics section of paper (Higher marks will be placed higher in the rank)

50. If one does not get Admit Card, whom should he contact?
He can contact to NEET Examination Unit, CBSE and also contact helpline number. However, candidates may contact CBSE only after 10th of April, 2013.

51. What is the qualifying criterion for NEET-UG?

  1. Candidate must have come in the merit list of National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to MBBS/BDS courses.

  2. Candidate must obtain minimum of marks at 50 percentile. However, in respect of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, the minimum marks shall be at 40 percentile. The percentile shall be determined on the basis of highest marks secured in All-India common merit list in 'National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for admission to MBBS/BDS courses'.

53. What is the admission criterion for MBBS/BDS courses based on NEET-UG scores?

  1. Class 12 marks do not have any weightage for entry into MBBS.

  2. Two types of rank lists will be generated - All India merit list and State wise merit list

  3. Admission under 15% All India quota seats in Government Medical Colleges (via All India merit list)

  4. Admission under 85% State quota seats in Government Medical Colleges (via State wise merit list)

  5. Admission to MBBS/BDS courses in Private Medical Colleges shall be subject to Policies of the State/Union Territory

  6. Admission to Government funded Medical Institutions/Medical or Dental Colleges Affiliated to Central Universities/Deemed Universities etc. shall be subject to prevailing reservation policies and rules of admission applicable to the Institution/University Concerned.

  7. Candidates Qualified in NEET-UG and opted for admission in Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune are required to appear for a second stage Screening conducted by the AFMC.

  8. Admission to AIIMS and JIPMER will be through the selection processes conducted by the Institutions concerned.
