About SOS
SVKM’s Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), is one of the top Management Schools in India, which was set up by Shri Vile Parle Kelvani Mandal in 1981 in Mumbai. Based on the performance and the 5 Star rating by NAAC in 1999, Ministry of HRD, on advice of UGC, conferred on NMIMS Deemed-to-be University status under section 3 of the UGC Act. Since becoming University, NMIMS expanded its horizon to take management education to a different level. In its conscious efforts to digress to newer disciplines, NMIMS has established several schools in Management, Technology, Science, Pharmacy, Architecture and Commerce. The University has strong international linkages with reputed Universities, leading to international assignments for teaching, research and, consultancy and faculty and students exchange programs. Today, nearly three decades after its inception, NMIMS continues its tradition of training young minds and finding solutions to address tomorrow’s challenges. School of Science: It was started in 2007 with a view to provide undergraduate and post graduate students an opportunity to be a part of the unique learning mythology of the university, which lays emphasis on academic excellence combined with industry oriented training. With the boom in information technology and more and more sophistication in instrumentation techniques, there is now a very thin dividing line between the various disciplines of science. Therefore there is a greater need for flexibility in scientific thought as well as training manpower on an interdisciplinary plane. With this thought in view, the SVKM’s NMIMS introduced, highly innovative and unique interdisciplinary courses at the School of Science from the academic year 2007-2008. The goal of the School of Science is to be a Center of Excellence in the domain of Pure and Applied Science by providing quality education and research.
All the Curriculums offered at the School of Science are programs by ‘Research’ and hence research constitutes a major thrust in all the programs. The focus is to generate a pool of highly qualified scientific talent who can fulfill the needs of Research Institutions as well as the demands in an industry setting. Thus the programs ensure employability; address global demands and community development. Overview & History The NMIMS Deemed-to-be-University, which began by offering programs in Management, enjoying international recognition as one of the leading institutions of Management training, has now established a School of Technology, a School of Pharmacy, a School of Commerce and a School of Science with a view to provide undergraduate and postgraduate students an opportunity to be a part of the unique learning methodology of the university, which lays emphasis on academic excellence combined with industry oriented training. The C. B. Patel Research Centre for Chemistry and Biological Sciences, a prime institution borne out of the foresight of the SVKM and its constant endeavour towards excellence in Science and Technology, has during the last 17 years not only established itself as a leading Research Centre but has also provided training to graduate students for manning posts in the Pharmaceutical industry, in para medical fields and more recently in clinical research organisations. Considering the expertise available in the various disciplines of science at the C. B. Patel Research Centre, Mithibai College, D. J. Sanghvi Engineering College and N. M. College, the NMIMS Deemed-to-be-University has established a School of Science whose very purpose is to develop technically skilled manpower for industry. In addition, the School of Science also conducts courses leading to the Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (PGDMLT) and Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Analytical Chemistry (PGDIAC). Dr. A. M. Bhagwat, Director of the C. B. Patel Research Centre, having vast experience in teaching and research, is the Co-ordinator of these teaching programs, ably supported by academicians, expert scientific personnel as well as experts from sister institutions and from industry. The School of Science (SOS) is a newly founded endeavor of the prestigious SVKM’S NMIMS (deemed to be University), in its efforts to diverge to various disciplines of higher education and learning. The SOS evolved in 2007-2008, with a view to provide undergraduate and post graduates an opportunity to embark on a challenging, yet exciting domain of Pure and Applied Sciences. At the SOS, we offer unique multi- as well as inter-disciplinary programs, viz, Post graduate program in Statistics; Integrated Post-graduate-Doctoral program in Biological Sciences & Chemical Sciences and a Doctoral program in Biological Sciences & Chemical Sciences. Our strategic future plan involves inclusion of innovative areas of inter-disciplinary research, in specific areas through the application of new and cutting-edge technologies. I welcome you all to an enjoyable and stimulating learning experience at the School of Science and look forward to working together to help us achieve our goal, to be recognized as a ‘Centre of Excellence’. Social Responsibility As an obligation to society, the School of Science in association with C. B. Patel Research Centre organizes/participates in camps for detection of the Thalassaemia trait and counsels those who test positive for this trait. In addition, a project for the detection of anemia in the school and college–going population has also been launched. The Thalassaemia Unit at the research centre was established in 1997 with generous support from the Society by way of resource input and encouragement particularly from Mumbai Thalassaemic Society and Parents Association Thalassaemic Unit Trust. The Thalassaemia Unit screens students from different Schools and Colleges for various blood ailments and counsels them if needed. Analysis of data on more than 47,000 students screened till date indicates that there is a significant number of students (more than 35% – 40%) with hemoglobin deficiency whose academic performance can be improved by immediate medical attention; as many as 3.5% students have thalassaemia trait and 2% have Sickle cell anemia. The quality of life of such afflicted students can definitely be improved by early diagnosis followed by family counseling. Further, genetically inherited disorder such as thalassaemia can be controlled only by awareness and education through counseling. A suitable cure is either not available or if available, it is experimental and too expensive even for the affluent section of our society. Realizing the need for such a facility at the Thalassaemia Unit of the Research Centre, The Parents Association Thalassaemic Unit Trust has generously donated few important types of equipment so that SVKM can provide a more efficient service to society. The S.V.K.M. through its C. B. Patel Research Centre has also launched an “ANAEMIA AWARENESS” project through which it undertakes testing of blood samples of all students in the various institutions of the S.V.K.M. Anaemia is prevalent in many parts of the world, particularly in the developing countries, mainly due to ignorance regarding its harmful effects. In India also anaemia is widespread and recent reports show that 86% of teenagers are afflicted; as a result the physical and mental growth of these individual is affected. Overall, not only is the school performance of these children badly affected but it also is a major cause for school dropouts. The Government of India along with the Indian Medical Association has initiated an ambitious project “ANAEMIA FREE INDIA”. The major goal is to create an awareness so as to bring about at least a 50% reduction in the number of persons suffering from this disorder by 2013. The Research Centre and the School of Science have launched its awareness project amongst the students of all the Institutions of the S.V.K.M. During a period of 8 years extending from the year 2000 to 2008 the Research Centre has analyzed over 47,000 blood samples for anemia and thalassaemia. Encouraged by these efforts the Parent Association Thalassaemic Unit Trust and Mumbai Thalassaemic Society are now concentrating their energies in trying to procure HPLC based Haemoglobin Testing System for the Research Centre through donations from Philanthropists / Charitable Trusts. |
