Why should I learn Wing Chun?
Wing Chun was created for the weak to defend against the strong. It teaches the proper use of body mechanics, two hands are used at the same time and one gets real time fighting experience with Chi Sao. Wing Chun is a blessing for all those who do not want to invest a lot of time and want to learn a system which is simple, compact and effective. Once trained, you just need to invest about 20 to 30 minutes a day for practicing this art.
Who can learn Wing Chun?
Although a highly advanced and complete system, Wing Chun can be learned by almost any gender within 12 to 55 years of age. The upper and lower limit is set based on the ability of the person to grasp the concepts, theories and ability to practice the art. If a student is worthy, then there is no bar. However we have preference to educated and well cultured candidates as we do not want to create anti social elements who would mis-use the art.
What are the different levels of Wing Chun training?
Broadly speaking there are 4 levels of Wing Chun training-
o Basic : Self Defense against one attacker
o Intermediate : Attack and Defense against multiple attackers
o Advanced : Teacher’s level
o Master : Contribute to the further propagation of the art
How is Wing Chun different than any other martial arts?
o Has only 4 to 6 forms of Katas, focus on application than aesthetics
o Advocates the use of skill and simultaneous use of two hands
o Chi Sao gives a simulation of the actual combat situation
o Does not require a person to be very strong
o The conditioning that we do at India Wing Chun will not damage the bones with the advance in age.
Can I defeat a Black Belt if I know Wing Chun?
The answer is Yes and No. Karate like most martial arts is a very disciplined and rigorous self defence system. A Black Belt dedicates at least 5 years to reach that level. Although Wing Chun is superior to most martial arts, only the dedication of a student will determine the end result. As per the philosophy of Wing chun the weak can overcome the strong with skill, and skill comes with dedicated practice of the art.

The late Bruce Lee had studied Wing Chun while growing up in the rough streets of Hong Kong. Bruce put Wing Chun in the international spotlight when he achieved international movie success. How much time will it take me to learn the complete art?
Well, the art itself is a life long learning process, its constantly evolving. However, if the goal is to learn how to defend oneself, after a 6 month period, a student can learn effective techniques to do just that. On the other hand, if he truly wants to learn the art itself, he can learn the complete art within a 2 to 3 year period. The “India Wing Chun” curriculum is compact 3 ½ years program. Is wing chun a good martial art for women?
In our opinion wing chun is perfect for women. Considering that the art itself was designed by a nun. What makes wing chun so effective, is that its not dependent on muscle and size. Its focus is understanding timing and structure. The idea is that skill will overcome brute strength is what wing chun teaches us.
What is chi sao?
Chi sao or otherwise referred to as sticky hands, is an exercise used to teach one about sensitivity, power, timing, and other concepts. This is not actual fighting. Chi sao helps the student develop his skill, is learning how to redirect force that comes at him at extremely close range. Two hands and extreme Chi sao can only be found in the wing chun. Are wing chun attacks only straight in?
This is all dependent on the range. From a distance, our goal is to close the gap and the quickest route is a straight line, however, the closer you get to your opponent the more circular the attacks become. Thus, the 3 forms in wing chun are different ranges. Siu Lim Tao represents a normal range between 2 opponents. Chum Kiu on the other hand exposes the practitioner to turning, since the gap is even closer. Finally, Bue Gee is used for emergency purposes and literally are a state where the bodies are touching next to each other.
How many forms are there in wing chun?
Siu Nim Tau, Chum Kiu & Bui Jee are the 3 empty hands forms or katas* to learn in wing chun. In addition to that, there's the mok yan jong (wooden dummy), the 6½ point pole and butterfly sword form.
Is there qi gong involved in wing chun?
Yes, there is qi gong. The qi gong training itself can be found within the forms. The beginners are taught about Qi Gong and its uses in Wing Chun, but the true nature of it can only be realized by dedicated practitioners.
