Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) Course

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling on the ground. At ICSA, all classes are no-gi, but students may wear a gi if they feel inclined. The goal is to gain a dominant position and force an opponent to submit/accept defeat using joint locks and chokes.

The first Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), in 1993, showed bouts between martial artists of different styles (karate vs taekwondo, Judo vs boxing, etc). Royce Gracie, a BJJ practitioner, overcame his larger, stronger opponents and won the UFC tournament because of a component missing in other systems: fighting on the ground. He submitted all of his opponents on his way to the championship.

In class, we can spar BJJ in relative safety because of its lack of strikes (punches, kicks, etc) and low impact nature.

Many styles require that a practitioner be strong, fast, or flexible to execute basic techniques. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu emphasizes technique over these physical qualities. A Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner (or “Jiujiteiro”) will use position and leverage to defeat a larger, stronger opponent.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has proven itself so effective that it has been adopted into US Military Combatives programs and many United States and Canadian law enforcement systems.

In class, you will learn:

- How to attack and reverse someone that is on top of you.

- How to prevent being struck in a ground fighting situation.

- How to control someone and move to advantageous positions.

Curriculum Outline

ICSA Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Program is divided into four units:

Unit 1: Guard

Unit 2: Passing (Guard)

Unit 3: Dominant Positions

Unit 4: Escapes

Each unit shows an aspect of ground-fighting and together these units work to make a coherent ground-fighting system.
