Ballroom Jive Characteristcs
1. The basic step of jive dancing consists of a six-beat pattern in which dancers step forward and back, and then shuffle-step to the left and then to the right. Jive is danced quickly--at a speed of between 32 and 44 bars per minute.
2. The jive dance consists of chasse turns, kicks and steps made with the feet. These in many cases, may be very complicated and the dancing partners should be careful to maintain their rhythm focus to prevent slipping off the track
3. It has a light, bouncing quality that makes it look easy, but jive is actually extremely challenging to dance. Despite its difficulty, jive dance's rich history and cheerful quality have made it a favorite of professional and social dancers alike.
4. In a competition, jive ballroom dance is normally the last dance and is considered to be a very hard dance to perform compared to the other dances. It is because of this purpose that most jive dancers save energy for the last burst to end a night that was filled with competition
History
Jive dancing originated in African-American communities in the southeastern U.S. Some believe that the earliest form of jive was a Seminole war dance, which slaves witnessed and copied, while others suggest that jive originated in African social dances passed down through generations. The dance takes its name from the popular jazz slang term "jive," a variant on the West African word "jev," which means "to speak disparagingly."
"Ballroom Jive" is the UK name for the specific competition style of Jitterbug developed by the dance-teaching establishment. Characterised by a 'chassis' from side to side and a back replace, this style accentuates the pumping action of the knees, as dancers shift their weight in the chassis. Included as the "American" part of the "Latin & American Dance Categories", it is widely danced today. Simplified versions are taught all over as basic Jitterbug, or as East Coast Swing triple swing.
Jive is a dance style that originated in the United States from African-Americans in the early 1930s. It was originally presented to the public as 'Jive' in 1934 by Cab Calloway. It is a lively and uninhibited variation of the Jitterbug, a form of Swing dance.
Jive dance developed alongside jazz and swing music, and it shares an upbeat tempo with these musical forms. Jive is danced in 4/4 time and is characterized by jittery, syncopated movements. Because of its quickness and loose, bouncy quality, the dance faced criticism for being "vulgar" when it first ascended to popularity. By the late 1940s, however, the dance was considered mainstream.
